Best Whitewater Kayaking PFD on the market.

I've had 20+ days on the new Indus, coming out of the green jacket. This PFD is a total gamechanger for whitewater kayakers. It's everything I loved about the Green Jacket with none of the faults. It definitely feels big when dry and brand new but once wet, this jacket feels like there's nothing there, just like the Green did. The absence of the clamshell is actually a welcome feature as I didn't really use the old pocket and found it to just get in the way a bit. Most boaters bring way too much stuff with them on their body and I believe this philosophy needs to change (not speaking to Guides). The added float is incredible; I've found it adds assistance in rolling, especially in pushy IV+,V; the PFD actually pushes the boat to the surface quicker and makes rolls flawless. Out here in Colorado we have a lot of scrappy, thin creeks and the added float helps in this scenario incredibly; I haven't rang my bell once since starting to use this jacket in low volume scenarios. More float is finally better. If mobility between the Green and the Indus is in question, think again. Freedom of mobility is virtually the same. I even playboat in this thing all the time and loop around. It's my only PFD and I would absolutely buy another. Give it a chance, get the size right, and get out there. Well done, Astral.

Different and better

100 days on the river later. Having over 10 years in a Green Jacket, during activity it doesn't seem different, but it's better. Currently my go to jacket for river running I also wear it playboating. When you first put this on it feels bulky, trust me the design does not get in your way on the river. Pouch for throw rope, side pouch for tether, ample storage in the front pocket. I do miss the clamshell, but it still fits everything. I'm 170# 6' in M/L

The Revamp I've Been Waiting For...

Have paddled with it now enough to comment on comfort while wearing, but haven't tested its swimming characteristics. It replaced my second green jacket and years of paddling in those. Thank you Astral for making an update and giving us higher flotation with very little bulk or any noteworthy downsides in my opinion. I won't be going back anything less personally and feel better prepared for any out of boat experience that might be coming my way!

High Float, high water!

Stoked about the high float. Definitley bulkier than the green jacket, but still comfortable. Sufficient pockets for rescue gear, pin kit, flip line, etc... , but no room for the non-essentials (Sunscreen, snacks, etc... ). A lot of the flotation is around the waist, which keeps it out of the way. Its just what I expected. I think I will use this for spring/ high water trips and kayaking, but switch back to my green jacket for summer multi-day guiding as the pocket space is valuable for that.

Nice Safety Upgrade

I want every advantage I can when and if things go wrong. Having the most buoyancy on the market was the main selling feature on the jacket. I got used to the little extra bulk very quickly and now don't notice any difference from the green jacket. Nice work Astral!

Love it!

Love this jacket. I’m 5’4, 150 lbs and ordered a S/M. It fit perfectly but mostly wearing it with a dry suit and it being a pullover, I exchanged for a M/L. I do have to cinch it down. Plenty of pockets- can fit webbing, 2 prussics, 2 pulleys, small med kit, carabiners and my phone. Haven’t tested the astral throw bag in it. I was super comfortable wearing it all day, took a minute to get used to how much front floatation, was also comfortable on a river board- which has always been a struggle for me with jackets creeping up in the back- the Indus stayed exactly in place. Super happy I got the Indus!

Great for paddling and essential for big swims

Comfortable, secure and with a good system to keep rescue gear organized. During an unintentional class IV swim the extra buoyancy was immediately obvious and appreciated. The only downside is the tunnel entry, it makes it difficult to add and remove layers in an expedition raft guiding context.

Great job Astral!

I love this PFD! It is just as comfortable as the green jacket and I feel like I have just as much dexterity paddling as well. What sets it apart from the green jacket is the storage. Believe it or not I am able to store just as much as I was able to in the green jacket and because there are more pockets my organization is much better. There was clearly a lot of thought and intention put into this design and it really shows. I hardly notice the extra flotation when paddling but during swim tests it is clearly more buoyant than most PFD’s I’ve used in the past. I recommend this vest to anyone who wants a little extra flotation and loves the green jacket design.

Best High flotation pfd!

I wore my new Indus on a high flow trip on the Colorado River for its maiden voyage. I have never been a fan of over the head entry pfd's, but the fit of the Indus makes it worth it. Lots of confidence in my whitewater space with the extra flotation and technical features. Thank you for making this pfd, the whitewater world has needed this!
