Smartwool already makes some pretty intelligent pieces of gear, but only the really clever pieces are given doctorates. When it comes to the SmartWool PhD Spring Glove, brains definitely win over brawn. The nylon and leather shell protect against that wet mashed potatoes you're sliding around in while still being dexterous enough for pole plants and pesky zippers. Wool basically wrote the original thesis on wicking, so you know that lining will keep your hands from overheating in the sunshine, naturally warding off odor in the process.

I decided to try these last season for backcountry as my ascent pair. I usually change out on top but found I didn't need to, my hands never got cold and they weren't wet. My Hestras, for the most part, stayed in my pack. I live in Steamboat Springs and ride at the resort as well with my family. I tried these at the start of the season and wore them EVERY day at the resort as well. There were a couple below zero days I had to put my hands in my coat on the lifts up but I was amazed how well they kept me warm. We rode 50 days until covid shut it down. The quality of the glove is outstanding and I thought the sizing was perfect. I wear a 10 in Hestra and the Large fit great. I'm not sure how these would work for catching a cab or walking your dog, but for their intended use as an active spring glove for the mountains, they're amazing. great job as usual Smartwool.

Nice materials, bit too breathable

I have mixed with my feelings with these gloves after using them thru the fall, winter and now spring. On the one hand, the quality of material seems to be excellent (leather fingers, wool lining, velcro wrist straps, etc). Fit is a bit long/loose as per some users mention. What really bothers me about these gloves is their total lack of insulating properties. While it is advertised as a spring glove that is suitable for snow and ski activities, I find these gloves to be overly breathable. The back of the palm is made if a mesh fabric material, and with any slight gust of wind, I can fell the chill go right thru my hand and into my fingers (not good when I wear it to walk my dog). Now if my hands were extremely hot and sweaty from heavy physical activity, then the breathabiliity might come in handy, especially on a overly warm spring ski day (and if I have worn too many layers). But overall the distribution of the windproof material on this glove is just odd and not well balanced out thru the glove. Good thing they have a excellent return policy from the company that guarantees 100% satisfaction. Will see if they hold up their guarantee.
