The tide shift towards disc brake equipped road bikes has seen in influx of riders looking for the same deep-dish, aerodynamic profiles found on their rim-disc whips and an echoing sound of crickets when assessing options. Zipp answers the call with its 808 Firecrest Carbon Disc Brake Road Clincher Wheel, bringing blazing speed and lightning quick stopping power to your next ride.
The 808 profile is aggressively designed to slice through the wind. It utilizes Zipp's signature Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control (ABLC) dimpling with strategically placed and sized dimples across the rim surface to reduce drag and smooth airflow, allowing the wheel to swoop through the air like a catnip-fueled kitten zooming after a fleeing mouse. ABLC boasts aerodynamic advantages at real-world yaw angles of ten to twenty degrees, compared to many wheels out there that feature minimum drag numbers at yaw angles of five to ten degrees that occur much less frequently outside of a wind tunnel. In more relatable terms, these wheels go faster and handle better than the competition in the windy conditions you'll actually see out on the road.
In addition to blazing speed on the flats, the 808's modest weight means it'll survive any climbs you might encounter without any troubles. For the concurrent descents, or in the event of a technical course, the disc brakes ensure confident stopping power and modulation unrivaled by any rim brake system on the market.
In the middle of it all, Zipp uses its 77 hub on the front wheel and its 177 hub on the rear for a silky smooth, friction-free ride every time you clip in. Featuring a new platform and graphics for 2016, these hubs boast increased bearing protection over their predecessors and are ready to roll without any pre-load adjustment.
The rear hub is compatible with a separately sold XD driver body, giving riders options for a wider cassette range of up to a 10-42 if needed. As an added bonus, driver bodies can be swapped out without having to re--dish the wheel to get back up and running. Each wheel includes an updated quick release skewer with a wider handle than previous ones that provides better leverage for setting the wheel and sits primly next to the frame when closed.
Each front wheel comes with 12 x 100mm and 15 x 100mm end caps; rear wheels include 12 x 135mm and 12 x 142mm end caps. Without these end caps, the wheels have standard road quick-release hubs. Each wheel also includes a Zipp Tangente quick-release skewer, rim tape, and a core valve extension. The rear wheel is available with either a Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo 11-speed compatible freehub body.
