Vest is awesome // bottles fall apart

Love this vest, as it’s super light and can comfortably hold anything I’ve needed it to hold, but I’ve gone through three bottles and all three have cracked in multiple places (usually in the middle of a long run). Ultimate Direction has been good (they even sent me a new bottle), but at this point, I’ve finally given up and just bought bottles from a different brand (that fit the vest when not quite full). Not ideal, but I do dig the vest. The bottles are junk.

After reading the raving reviews online I was ready to love this vest, but overall I'm pretty disappointed. If you plan on using poles with this vest, don't! I have ended up just holding the poles in my hands because the stowage system is so bad on this vest (I use Leki poles). First, the loops are too big, the poles slowing work themselves out and fall to the ground. They certainly are not sized correctly for trail running poles, maybe okay for hiking poles. Second, because of where the pole tip sits when stowed, by my swinging arms/elbows, the tips literally drew blood from my arm, and left me with scratches. I have found no way to alleviate this when the poles are stowed. Third, the button snaps for the pole holders are far too small, they really need to be normal size snap buttons. These micro buttons are way to hard to snap while running and I find myself needing to stop to snap them closed. The other issue...The bottle holders do not go high enough. When the bottles are almost full it is really hard to actually get them to fit in the pockets. This has caused a bottle to pop out and fall to the ground on multiple occasions. Not okay when in a race. Really annoying when training. The good...the vest is comfy. I never found it annoying to wear like some of my older vests. It also breathes quite well (I am in Arizona) and the mesh really helps with this. I can hold a fair amount of items in the vest, more than I thought when I purchased, so that is welcome. Another thing to be aware of...there is no zipper to close the rear pocket. I have found my cell phone falling out and knocking me on the back of my head a few times when bending over to tightening my shoelace. I get that the lack of zipper probably saves weight, but be aware the contents can fall out when not upright!

Lightweight Functionality

Great hydration vest. I primarily use this for short/moderate runs to hold my huge phone and some water, but knowing this could be used for much longer runs. This vest breathes well, fits securely, has numerous pockets and pouches( only 2 zippered) which are perfect for their purposes. Water bottles are IMO better than others tasting clean water with no plastic taste as advertised. I am a bigger guy at 225lbs ~44 inch chest and Large fits adequately and comfortably. Thanks UD and Backcountry.

Get a Salomon instead

I've had plenty of packs, but this one has got to be one of the worst. I've taken it on a few trail runs between 8 and 15 miles and this pack reminded me it was there for every step. You have a choice between letting the bottles bounce around like a bra-less 90 year old lady or tightening the straps down to the point you can hardly breathe. In case you start to get used to the bounce the seams will rub on your neck like a cheese grater. So awesome. This is incredible to believe because I have a large chest (44 inches). Smaller runners must have this thing riding halfway up their neck. The only good things I can say is the pack breathes well. The new UD bottles don't have any plastic taste (as advertised), but they are remarkably stiff and the nozzles don't come apart to air out. This also means the tips aren't interchangeable with any of the other hydropak flasks you may already have. Do yourself a favor and go get a Salomon - there's a reason they're the gold standard.
