When the trail is rough and rocky you'll still have a smooth ride in the Topo Athletic Ultraventure Trail Running Shoe. Designed with lots of cushioning and reliable trail features, this shoe is perfect for anyone looking to add comfort on long runs or just looking for more everyday support. The triple-density EVA midsole uses an innovative design to keep your ride responsive and energized, while providing stability throughout your gait and a softer landing on downhills. You've also got a Vibram XS Trek outsole that gives you reliable grip when you're darting over rocky trails or racing back to the trailhead. The lug pattern on this outsole is designed to shed mud and snow, so you can keep charging on in inclement weather. The Ultraventure's upper is constructed with a tough yet breathable mesh that regulates temperature while resisting abrasions from overgrown trails, and also features a self-draining system that'll dump water from puddles and rainy skies.

My favorite shoes for trail running and hiking, just purchased my second pair. Very comfortable right out of the box, I like the Topo fit. I found the shoes to be true to size. Good traction in wet conditions. Breathable. Good support and protection on rough trails. I put over 400 miles on my first pair so far with no issues.

I have wider feet and I've tried a ton of shoes over the years. I ran in Books Adrenalines the most, but have run in Hokas and Altras as well. These are my favorite trail shoes. Good cushion, great traction, no blistering on longer runs (which was part of my problem with Hokas in runs over 10 miles). I like the minimal drop instead of zero drop and my Achilles do much better in minimal drop shoes. The tread does seem to wear down a little faster than some others I've run in, but that's a tradeoff I'm ok with for the soft feel.

After searching for quite some time for the ideal trail shoe, I believe I finally found it with Topo Athletic. For me, the Ultraventure fits true-to-size and feels amazing. I've been running in Altra exclusively for some years now, but I seem to wear them out quickly, both in midsole cushioning and upper wear. While these have a 5mm drop instead of the 0mm drop I am accustomed to, I am really liking them. So far they are holding up well and the midsole has a good balance of cushion and responsiveness. As of right now I think I'll be able to get a lot more miles on the trail with them. Sometimes trying something new is scary and doesn't pan out. With these Ultraventures though, I think I've finally found a proper trail shoe that is going to take a pounding and hold up to it. Plus, the traction is killer. The Vibram XS Trek outsole is providing ample grip on varied terrain and conditions (the perks of late Spring). Could I knock it down a notch when it comes to sex-appeal? Yes, but I won't because on the mountain function beats fashion everyday. So I'll happily rock these and be happy when they dress them up on the next iteration.
