Why We Like The X Ultra 4 GTX Wide Hiking Shoe

Salomon's signature line of trail shoes returns with powerful upgrades, and this version is built to fit hikers and runners with wider feet. The new chassis protects ankle articulations on the outer foot, providing extra stability without limiting mobility, so we feel even more confident when navigating technical terrain. The Contagrip MA rubber sole has tire-like lugs that provide us with improved traction on a wide variety of surfaces. To make these shoes the ultimate trail companion, Salomon added GORE-TEX waterproofing to keep feet dry from the outside and inside.

These shoes ran narrow in the midfoot.

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
12

I ordered my usual size 12. They were too narrow in the fore foot but the length seemed fine. I ordered a 12 wide fit and they were still too narrow in the fore foot and the strap in the mid foot seemed uncomfortable. They did seem to have a lot of lateral stability though.

Second pair of X ULTRA 4 WIDE GORE-TEX in 10.5

The extra tall heal tab is very comfortable and limits vertical travel of the foot within the shoe. Loved my last pair of these shoes, the lacing system is perfect for me, but the very thin laces eventually cut through a lower eyelet - it may need similar reinforcing as the upper eyelets. I was satisfied with the room in the toe box, but the flexibility of this area in the shoe I believe accelerates breakdown of the Gore-Tex upper. Very comfortable on mixed terrain, very easy to adjust/remove, satisfactory waterproofing, but durability leaves something to be desired.

I SHOULD HAVE BELIEVED THE OTHER REVIEWERS

THEY ONLY LASTED A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE COMING APART EXACTLY WHERE OTHER REVIEWERS SAID THEY WOULD. I LOVE THE LOOK OF THESE AND HAVE OWNED PROBABLY 10 PAIRS, BUT I WILL HAVE TO MOVE ON TO ANOTHER BRAND. PS I CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWWEN THE WIDE VERSION I PURCHASED AND A COUPLE OF OLD PAIRS OF NORMAL WIDTH SHOES.

Great shoe with some wear issues

I am now on my fourth pair of x ultra 4 (wide) after trying Hokas and Merrells . The Salimon provides much more stability on uneven ground than the Hokas and is much lighter than the Merrells. Both Hokas and Merrells have their advantages but the x ultra 4 is a better fit for my foot and activity. Downsides? The Salomon’s tread while providing excellent traction, is not as durable as Vibrim soles. The last two pairs have areas on the top (where it flexes at the toes) that are separating but doesn’t seem to affect the waterproof sock lining. So far I haven’t found a better wide shoe for my foot.

Not wide at all.

This shoe has a "cowboy boot" toe box. It's unlike any other wide Salomon shoes.

Impossible to break in

Size Bought:
11 W

Terrible shoes - impossible to break in. The fabric (if you can call it that) was still so stiff after 3 weeks of wear I had to give up on them. Feels like hard plastic - AVOID THESE SHOES

Needs a bit of time for break in

The Speedcross are lighter & more comfortable but with only 1 lug set down the middle, they wear out quickly. I don't seem to notice the weight, it's only a bit, but I'm guessing because of the Gore-tex, they are stiffer which seem to be requiring a few more wears to soften up. My feet are staying dry but I'm thinking they're be sweating in the warmer temperatures.

I will start out by saying I love this brand of hiking boot, but Unfortunately these shoes are no where near a wide! I sized up and ordered a wide based on previous reviews but to no avail, I could barely get my foot in. Very disappointed, I have had 3 pairs previously and loved them all. The positive behind this is Backcounty shipped fast and the return process was painless.

Loved these shoes until I started walking.

Love the look of these, the size 12 wide were a perfect fit, and the thin laces seemed like a great lacing system. Unfortunately, after walking maybe a 100 meters the crease formed at the big toe in the stiff outer material began poking me in the top of the foot and I had to take them off. I saw this issue mentioned by another reviewer, and it is a very real design flaw. The good news is it started right away and they were returned as new. Would this have gone away with time? Hard to say but it was painful enough I didn't want to find out.
