S/Lab Ultra 3 Trail Running Shoe delivers pro-level performance for long-distance efforts

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"The S/Lab Ultra 3 is my long-distance weapon of choice. It’s light, snug, and durable, but what stands out is how stable it feels mile after mile. The cushioning holds up deep into the run, and the outsole grips everything from dry granite to wet roots. It’s built for serious mileage."

When the route is long, remote, and unpredictable, we trust the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 Trail Running Shoe to go the distance. Designed in collaboration with elite mountain athletes, this shoe is built for endurance racing and high-mileage training days on rugged terrain.

The sock-like fit comes from a combination of a lightweight, breathable upper and Salomon’s signature Sensifit™ and EndoFit™ systems, which cradle the foot securely while allowing natural flex. Energy Save cushioning under the forefoot adds protection and rebound over rough ground, while the Contagrip® outsole grips confidently across dry, loose, or wet trail conditions. From mountain ultras to long days on solo missions, this shoe delivers reliable support without slowing us down.

Became my winter go to!

Am a walker, not a runner, but the grip and the build of this shoe made it my go to for all winter days without significant snowfall. Felt more confidence than I have in years, without the weight of bootz.

Game changer

This is my 3rd pair. I’ve never been so excited by a pair of shoes as I have with these. The way they hug my feet is perfect and they’re comfortable straight out of the box even though I have wide feet. The soles are thin enough and flexible enough to feel the ground, but stiff enough that my foot won’t bend in half if I land hard on a rock. Other shoes felt a little sloppy while running on more challenging trails, but these shoes make me feel like a mountain goat. My speed and agility has improved so much because of these shoes.

Good trail and mountain shoe

I like these shoes a lot I do triathlons and sometimes involves running up mountains. I bought these because of the ‘sock’ inner which has been very effective They are comfortable and responsive and give me confidence to be quick. The grip is excellent on gravel, dry rocky areas and even soil and turf but lethal on wet slippery rocks Do not buy these if you might be running in wet rocky areas. Along with others I find the lace pocket awkward to use and they could do with a loop to aid getting in. This is a negative for my needs as I often need to get them on quickly Otherwise very happy with them given those limitations The comfort, responsiveness and ‘sock’ inner outweigh the negatives at the moment.

Feels like a sock, light and fast

This shoe fits & feels like a sock. A bit tight to put on, but once your foot is in, it's an amazing sensation of the shoes being wrapped around your foot, providing a great connection with the terrain. Combined with the light weight, it gives a great boost of confidence that you can and will go fast. On the flip side, it feels less cushioned than other competitive products out there. However, with those alternatives, you always lose that connection with the terrain, that makes the S/LAB ULTRA 3 feel so sharp. The grip is good - at least on dry surfaces. I am a heavy pronator, and I found the stability very good, definitely one of the best among all trail running shoes. One detail that could be improved: I find that the little pocket for the laces extends a bit too low, which causes the laces to actually run over the pocket when you tighten them. That makes the access to the pocket a bit tricky. Other than that,... I am in love. Cannot wait to clock days of running in the Alps this summer with the ULTRA 3

Best all-around trail shoe

I purchased the shoe for my wife about a month ago. She’s raved about it ever since. She really enjoys the comfort, traction and the shoes low weight. I’ll be purchasing a pair for myself in the near future!

Fast, stable ride , with some limitations

I found this shoe to be a dream for fast moving on technical trails. As you’ll read repeatedly, great lockdown in heel, foot won’t move inside shoe. But— 1. After 30 miles, 50K of such terrain my feet were bruised just from the distance. Some result with two attempts, one training and one racing. There is not a lot of cushion here. 2. S-lab ultra 3 were sure-footed and impeccably stable in dry (but still highly technical terrain). 75 miles on them, still good. Then I tried in soaking wet, mud and wet rock conditions. On wet rock, (which is always dangerous) I was surprised at how many times the contra grip outsoles let me down (7x). If your feet are young and can take a beating, you may find cushioning adequate over the longest distances. I found these shoes very useful for a fast 30 miles, and changed them after that. Although the upper and sidewalls are minimal , shoes protected feet, but not from the pounding underfoot. I can also say that while they get soaked easily, these shoes drain well enough. I just wouldn’t use in wet conditions and definitely NOT on wet rock. Maybe also because these are meant for speed and speed on wet rock is a dangerous game.

Very tight entrance

Don’t work for people with regular or high arch. Tight entrance seam to work only for people with pencil thin feet, otherwise it is a strangle to put them on. Ones on, great fit. Would buy if can accommodate normal/arch feet.

Responsive shoes

I’ve used these for a few trail runs in a mixture of rocky and sandy terrain. They feel super responsive and fit like a glove, the toe box feels a bit bulky to me. I do a bit of scrambling with my trail runs and they felt a bit slippery for the task, oddly enough I feel like the XT-6s perform better at scrambling although they are considered “lifestyle” shoes. True to size when compared to the XT-6s.
