Great running pack with durability issue
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- M
- Height:
- 5' 7"
- Weight:
- 160
Bought my first one at the start of 2020. The pack is able to carry just about everything you need for a long run, or even a day hike (if the weather is good). The pack is not weather resistant so keep that in mind if you're going out. I always carry a zip lock bag to throw my phone into if needed. I've used this pack running in urban and trail settings as well as used it for hiking in the rocky mountains of Western Canada. It preforms well, is light, and carries most of the gear you'll need for a one day outing. The cons: The durability of this pack is low. After one year of 2-3x a week usage the pack starts to fail. For me, the first failure was the polycord straps that you use to tightening the pack on your chest. This is an easy fix, you can get cord at a local hardware store or REI, but you cannot find the exact replacement in North America anywhere. I contacted Salomon directly. The second thing are the zippers. Even with consistent (hand) washing they will get jammed up with sweat residue and eventually stop opening. However none of the fabric of the pack has had any issues so far. It's just the associated parts. Major major pro: Salomon warranty. I filed a warranty claim regarding the above listed issues and they were kind enough to send me a second pack! Overall this pack preforms exactly as advertised, and is maybe on the slightly pricey side, but I would buy it again. It's comfortable, fits well, and holds everything I need. I only wish it was a little more durable.

Good first vest, one major flaw for me
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- L
- Height:
- 5' 9"
- Weight:
- 178
It's my first vest, and it's fine. For reference, I'm ~5'9" 178lbs with 43-44" chest, lean build with lots of climbing and Large fits fine. I think if I went bigger it might fit my chest better but the rest wouldn't sit right. I have finally graduated from running while holding a nalgene and switching hands all the time like a club-wielding neanderthal. I personally like the bottles with the solid bottom, even though another reviewer did not. Storage is good and the vest material is a bit scratchy but it'll soften over time. Fit is good but I had to re-locate the chest straps and I like that if those components fail at some point they'll be easy to replace. And from the feel of things, they will fail eventually. Did I feel any warmer with it on? No. The vest is very light, barely noticeable from a clothing perspective, and dries fast. Exactly what it is designed to do. My MAJOR gripe with this vest is the location of the side zippers for the pockets. Whoever decided to put zippers precisely in the zone where your arm rubs against your side needs a visit from the smack fairy. Running with a tank-top shirt was very unpleasant and the zipper head really scratches up the inside of your arm. I had to run with the zippers completely open, losing a fair amount of the limited storage in this vest. Even open, you're still rubbing the zipper tracks. With sleeves this wasn't as much of an issue but still very noticeable. This is the biggest reason I wouldn't recommend this vest. Another usability flaw is that the smaller pocket openings in front of the main water bottle pockets will block you from putting the bottle back into its pocket unless you reach in a bit deeper than you instinctively would to open both pockets. While on the topic of water bottle pockets the inner loops that go around the bottle tops are very hard to get a hold of. I use them to keep the empty bottle steady but they're a bit fidgy to get out. I'm debating selling it and going with something else since returning something you've sweated in is a dick move. Or just rip off the zippers entirely and have extra breathing holes. Or maybe keep it around for easy stuff with the dogs when it's colder. The main bottles plus a collapsible bottle in the back will do fine and it holds doggie wag bags well.

Bounces and Bruises
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- M

- 5' 8"
- Weight:
- 170
DISCLAIMER: This is my first running vest, so issues with this vest MAY plague all vests, and I might just not be used to them. I can only speak specifically to this vest. The material of this vest is light and thin and soft and stretchy. The vest itself is very comfortable. There are a couple of compartments in the back where you could probably stuff a super thin and small wind shell, and maybe some extra snacks. I did a test run with this vest empty, just to see how it felt, and if it would cause me to overheat. It didn't. It was actually quite pleasant and comfortable. The issues I had with this vest revolve entirely around the hydration system and capabilities. After my empty test run, I filled the bottles to max fill, and took off for a nice 11 mile run. As soon as I started running, the full bottles and chest instantly started bouncing. This bouncing went away after ten minutes or so, and drinking a little bit. At the end of this 11 mile run, I felt like I had small bruises on my ribs and/or costal cartilage where the bottom of the water bottle sits and hits. If you're unfamiliar, most of the water bottles are made out of a soft plastic, more of a bag than a bottle. The top is a hard plastic, to maintain the bottle top shape, but the tops aren't an issue. The bottoms of these bottles are kind of in between hard and soft. I believe they're called "shaped", and I believe they're "shaped" for easy insertion into their pockets. The issue is that these harder end-caps then bounce up and down, battering my ribs. Ten days after the first battering, I thought the bruises were gone, so I strapped the vest back on and took off for another 10 mountain miles. I was wrong: the bruises were not gone. I tried only filling the bottles to 85-90%, but they still bounced quite a bit, and at the end of this second run, my ribs feel quite abused. I'm not sure I could handle another 10 mile run. Salomon DOES make similar flasks withOUT the harder "shaped" plastic end-caps for sale separately. If these were included with this vest, I probably would have tried to give it 3.5 stars. Maybe even 4. As is, this vest may be good for fast-hiking, or quick outings, as the vest itself is very comfortable. But I wouldn't recommend running in this vest, which is what I thought it was designed for, so only 2 stars as a running vest. (Also, just as a sizing note, I'm 5'8", a lean 170lbs, with a 40-42" chest, and a size Medium fits well, though a size Large may be more recommended.)

Expensive vest, doesn't support bladder
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
- Size Bought:
- Large
- Height:
- 5' 10"
- Weight:
- 190
This is a premium racing vest if you only need to carry 1 L of water (two 500ml bottles). The build quality seems top notch and it does have easy to access, well thought out pockets everywhere. The material is really fine stretchy dri-fit material with a lightweight mesh on the inside for support. My issue is twofold: 1. questionable compatibility with bladders and 2. price. There is a big main back compartment that seems it would be a fit for bladders. I did a lot of research and saw conflicting information on bladders, some reviews said it supported and others did not. Salomon's website said it did not come with a bladder included (which most / all of it's running vest do not) however that implies it supports a bladder. I put a 1.5L bladder in the back main compartment, and due to the stretchy dri-fit material the bladder was really bouncy. Second point is the price, this is the most expensive running vest I've come across and while I'm usually happy to pay for good gear, I don't think the extra cost is worth it given the limited water carrying capacity.
