Updated from the previous generation, the Pearl Izumi X-Alp Elevate Cycling Shoe sheds some weight and adds support for your off-road epics by bike. Taking a bit off the top, Pearl Izumi reduces the bulk and weight of the tongue and upper material so you’ll feel lighter on the pedals and freer when on-foot. Pure cyclists will enjoy updated dual-dial BOA Fit System that hugs with just the right amount of pressure to keep feet stable in punchy, uphill switchbacks. And the adventure-seeker in us will find limitless exploration with the Vibram ECOSTEP rubber sole that provides off-the-beaten-path walkability. For such adventures, Pearl Izumi adds a reinforced toe box to fend on rocky impacts and an EVA midsole to cushion on hard-pack trails.

All day comfort. Have used in 100mi MTB race and 138mi gravel/mtb mix. I've had two pairs of these, I like them that much. Biggest pro is the all day comfort and Vibram outsole for hiking (like in the UP in Michigan), you can scramble up anything in these because of the outsole rubber and because the upper is just so comfortable. Biggest cons would be lack of drainage (they hold a ton of water - do not dry all that quickly and they do not have any drain ports) and then the lack of venting (there is no venting). I still grab them for the long days just because of the comfort, but I use other shoes for racing shorter events or when I need drainage. Regarding the lack of venting, I see that as a blessing for cold weather riding because combined with a good wool sock, I am good for 2-3hrs in these down to about 35F. No air gets in. Fit true to size for sure, aligns perfectly to Specialized and Giro sizing.
