The weather may feel cold and dreary, but we head out there for the trout, not the weather. Luckily we have the Tough Puff Insulated Jacket to keep us warm as we head down to the river and start slinging flies even when the weather is anything but cooperative. The face fabric is abrasion-resistant for bushwhacking and water-resistant so you don’t have to leave your honey hole when met with passing showers.

Quality Jacket

I read Eric B's review from 2018, and the Patagonia Tough Puff jacket must have changed a lot since then, because there is no way someone who is 5'10" is going to be able to wear a size XXL. I'm 6' 3" 230 lbs, and the XL is roomy for me, which is exactly what I was looking for. I can wear a base layer and a thick fleece mid layer under the jacket without feeling constricted. Usually, I have to go up to a size XXL to get the sleeve length that I want. However, the sleeves on the XL are nice and long and do not ride up a single bit when I stretch my arms out. That's the first test I do with any jacket or shirt I try on: I stretch my arms out and check if the sleeves ride up. The stretch material is super comfortable, and it makes movement, like casting, feel silky smooth. The hood fits snugly without any adjusters. The only negative I can find is that the jacket feels noticeably heavy in my hand (contrary to what Eric B. said in 2018 about his XXL jacket being very light). The insulation isn't down, so yeah the jacket is going to feel heavier than a down jacket. I haven't used the jacket yet, but it is feels like a quality jacket, and I expect it will perform admirably in cold weather while fly fishing. I plan to wear a shell over the jacket to block cold winds and rain, but maybe that is overkill. I purchased five jackets from Backcountry looking for a winter fly fishing jacket, including the Simms Exstream Hooded jacket, and I returned them all. Thanks to Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia for making such a nice piece of gear!

Great jacket sheds water well and keeps me very warm in the wind.. makes a good part of a winter weather system add a rain shell and a base layer and it's as good as a parka.
