Why We Like The Outdoor Research Vigor Grid Fleece Full-Zip Hooded Jacket

We've gotten pretty good at layering and delayering during our high-intensity pursuits, but it's also nice to have a versatile layering piece that regulates our temperature and moisture for us—like Outdoor Research's Vigor Grid Fleece Full-Zip Hooded Jacket. The Vigor features a light grid fleece that both traps warm air against our body while also letting heat and moisture escape when our exertion level goes up. On top of that, it features OR's ActiveTemp polymer against our skin, which actively adjusts to our temperature as our activity level changes to regulate our body temperature and the microclimate under the jacket. That's a lot of tech packed into a mid-layer fleece—tech that keeps us comfortable and cuts down on the time we spend adding or subtracting layers as we hike, climb, ski, or ride. The Vigor also wears well as a casual top or outer layer in milder weather.

Technical fleece perfection.

This is the perfect layering fleece. It's a snug fit for layering. This isn't a casual piece. It's here to go on an adventure and it's perfect for that. Wear this by itself or with and outer shell and you are good to go for cool to cold hike. It's breathable yet warm. I love mine and you will love yours.

In between sizes

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
Medium

Tried this in a large and medium. Neither works for me. I have ~10 OR jackets, mid layers, and shirts in size medium that I’ve purchased over the last decade. They’ve always been my go-to, as their medium used to run a bit closer to a size 40 men’s jacket, rather than some brands (e.g. Patagonia) where the medium tends toward a 38. I’m 5’11”, fit, 160-165lbs depending on the season. This fleece is cut very small in medium. (Even for a form-fitting midlayer, which is what I was looking for.) Oddly, the large was much too big and loose.

Those Fit brothers, Slim & Trim, can bite me

The Fit brothers, ol' Slim and Trim, can bite me. I had to send 'em packin'. Not for normal size, middle aged people

Mmm, warm.

Breaths well on the move and retains warmth when resting. Hood fits well under a helmet. Love the grid fleece.

Stoked

Bought it mostly for the color, but I love the warmth! Was expecting something like a Patagonia R1, but it feels way warmer. I'd love one in teal.

Very Happy

I have fleece hoody's from Fjallraven, 7mesh, arc'teryx. This is one of the best. It's light and warm. The fit is amazing. 6'4, 195 lbs in XL.

Great!

This hoodie is great! Its stiching is solid, and the fit is great for wearing under heavier layers. The reason that I subtracted a star is that the orange color is not as bright as the picture suggests. I bought this hoodie for big game hunting, but it's not even close to safe/legal blaze orange. It's more of a burnt orange, very subdued. I honestly feel a little tricked by how bright they make it look in the picture... Anywho, if color isn't a big deal to you, this hoodie works great!

Nicely feeling fleece, throat zip is tight/stiff

Great feeling fleece. Soft, warm, great thumbs holes, good length. When I fully zip the front, the section that fits on the throat is stiff and tight. Hurts a bit to looks down with it fully zipped up. Hopefully it loosens up as it wears in.

I would by this product again.

This is fantastic. I own the older vigor pull-over. This hoodie has a better overall fit. Well done Outdoor Research!

High quality-great features-almost unwearable.

Bought this to wear as part of an extreme cold alpine system component, that is as a mid layer over three (3) layers of merino wool base layers and beneath an OR hard shell and when necessary, OR puffy. Fat chance! Hood-excellent. Pockets-excellent. Thumb holes in sleeves-great, especially for what is supposed to be a mid layer. Inner pockets-great. Really, really comfortable. But all of that is moot. Apparently OR defines "Trim fit" as a snug fit for malnourished third world famine refugees. I MIGHT be able to layer this over a skin-tight t-shirt...maybe. And I bought the largest size available. I did give it three stars because I can wear it without an underlayer when jogging as long as I don't run too fast when it would probably interfere with deep, fast breathing. If you are about six feet (1.8 m) tall and weigh 165 pounds (75 kg) this might work for you as a mid-layer IF you buy size XXL. Otherwise I don't recommend it.
