With the Osprey Stratos 34 Backpack, you're ready for any mountainous adventure whether it's hiking, climbing, or backpacking for a night. This pack fits all the gear you need for a day at crag, food and snacks for a full day hike, or even the necessary equipment to spend a night out in the woods.
The designers at Osprey shaped this pack's LightWire alloy frame in such a unique way that it optimizes your load's balance as well as enhances the ventilation system with the help of the AirSpeed back panel. Add that to the sewn-in spacer mesh at both the waist-belt and the shoulder straps, and you're ready to tackle anything in the mountains without a sweat. The waist-belt utilizes ErgoPull straps for an ideal fit, and the panel access allows you to get anything out of your pack with ease regardless of where it is.
The blend of high-tenacity nylon and 420HD nylon overlays will handle rocky scrapes and dirt dragging for years, and Osprey even integrated a rain cover so you can continue your mountainous adventures in poor conditions. The Stratos 34 also features a bottom zippered compartment for your sleeping bag, straps for your sleeping pad that you can remove when it's not an overnight adventure.

I have used this bag for various day hikes and it has held up very well. The metal structure that is worked into the back is very nice for breathability and comfort. The bag also has more space than I thought which is a major plus. I love Osprey and I recommend this pack to anyone who wants more space to carry gear on day hikes.

(Update 2020) Finally used this pack as an overnight backwoods pack. It was an adequate size for one night. I went with my daughter with a child's Osprey pack. I carried the 2-person tent, clothing and her sleeping pad inside, and attached my bag and sleeping pad outside, along with a shovel, raincoat. The bottom pocket held most cooking gear. I agree with Shaun S. that "you must choose between filling the organizer pockets or filling the main volume". I was only able to put small flat items in any of the pockets with the bag stuffed.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With this bag stuffed and loaded at 30.5lbs total, it remained very comfortable for me. I noticed the weight on the hike, but not discomfort in any one spot. The hip belt did its job and I didn't need to keep adjusting shoulder straps for comfort. The weight was not dispersed too far high and back like other packs I've owned. My back didn't sweat because the ventilated back panel did its job.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Final opinion, I'm keeping the 5-stars with understanding that this is best suited as a day-pack and not stuffed to capacity. The Stratos 34 can be used for overnights, but if you're looking for that primarily, I'd look at a different design that gives slightly more volume with pockets more suited for that purpose. ################################################ Initial review (2017) ################ I purchased this bag for the purpose of a large daypack. It could be used as a minimalist overnight pack, and I plan on trying it at least once. My main goal was for holding a DSLR camera and large lens in the main compartment, tripod on the outside, rain gear in the bottom compartment, cell phone and small gear in the belt pockets, plenty of water, snacks, first aid kit, etc in other compartments. It does all this very well with room to spare. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Though not specifically designed as a camera backpack, this pack gives quick access to the main compartment, especially compared to similar sized packs with the popular top compartment above a drawstring. Unlike camera backpacks, it has room for all the other day-packing stuff you may need. The torso height on the Medium/Large Stratos 34 can be adjusted to accommodate my height (72"), torso height (20"). Torso adjustment is maxed out, so the 21" max toro height might depend on a person's build. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I've used it a few times and here are my observations: The construction seems solid; my back didn't get sweaty; the weight distribution felt great, with the majority on my hips; the hip pockets worked fine for a medium cell phone; there were no squeaks from materials rubbing inside the pack (silence is key when out in nature); the water bottles were accessible without taking the pack off--for me anyway. I don't plan on using a hydration system, so no comment there. The main compartment zipper works mostly well except around the top corners. It doesn't snag in the surrounding material, but the zipper cover slows it down a bit. I sometimes flip it back when using. The lower pocket is perfect for rain gear or layers, but is designed for a sleeping bag. Only a higher temp, very compressible down bag might fit, as the compartment is pretty small. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Overall I love this bag for my purposes and plan on really putting it to the test. If you're looking for a minimalist overnight backpacking pack, then know your gear and what 34 liters is, and if unsure, chat with customer service for details before buying.
