Lighter and lower, the Nike React Terra Kiger 9 Trail Running Shoe makes us one with the trail to help us find our flow quicker. Nike removed the forefoot Air pod and replaced it with a full-length React foam midsole to let our forefoot feel the terrain on our strikes, enhancing proprioception for greater stability that won't slow our pace. As we bound along loose trail, the revamped upper stops debris from wriggling in, and the multi-directional lugs give us biting traction for efficient hill strides.

Such a letdown

I have loved the Terra Kiger 8--have owned two pairs--and was looking forward to being impressed by these. Unfortunately, they've made changes to the geometry that disappoint. First, the heel has been raised, which makes uphill climbs more difficult and unstable as you must shift more weight to the front of the foot; the Kiger 8 was neutral, providing more traction and confidence. Also, the foam is softer--you feel the squishy bubble inside instead of the ground--this is my biggest gripe: on uneven, rocky, wet terrain this is a real disadvantage. The toebox has also been slimmed down too. Finally, the back heel is more bulky, sloping outwards, leaving it dragging against terrain where the 8 did not. In the end, it's a slower, less stable, less comfortable shoe. I guess I will have to go buy some more 8s!
