Why We Like The Merrell Rogue Hiker Mid GTX Boot
Most Merrells are known for their sidewalk-to-summit versatility. Not the new Rogue Hiker Mid GTX Boot. Forget the sidewalk— this is a tricked-out backpacking boot with plenty of extras to help us carry heavier packs on true trails. The mid-cut ankle collars provide more ankle support than Merrells typically do with a rock plate underfoot for added stability and support for backpacking. The waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX lining lets us hike comfortably in wet weather while the Vibram Megagrip outsoles have terrific traction in dry and wet conditions for four-season performance. At the same time, it incorporates the fit of the Agility Peak trail running shoe to keep things comfortable and lighter. New for 2023, this backpacking boot is sure to turn some heads on the trail.

Amazing low impact !
I swear by Merrell and this hiking boots are the lightest I’ve ever had so comfortable, very cushioned . I’ve had 3 back surgeries and I go hiking a lot . I need to have super good low impact h boots and this top them all !!! Beautiful!

She loves them!
Got these for my wife because I have the men’s version. She said it’s like walking on a cloud! Grippy and good for long hikes which we do up here in the Rockies pretty frequently!

Not waterproof!
First real test of my new “waterproof” boots was a complete fail. Bought a new pair to replace my old Keens for a month long hiking vacation in the Canadian Rockies. Any amount of water on the trail causes water to seep in from low on the boot somewhere as the underside of the soles seem to be wetter than the tops. My socks are soaked and my flesh is bright white and water logged itself. My poor feet! If we were tent camping they’d never be dry by the next day. As is they have to sit over the heater vent upside down overnight to dry out. On the same trails, my husband’s boots are completely dry. So disappointing! Love how these boots fit and wear but if you can’t trust them for dry feet they are unwearable in the mountains.

Great features but not durable
I bought these boots for my daughter for hiking/hunting this season. To start, they fit well and are super light. Unfortunately, we only hiked a total of 3 miles on a manicured trail and the soles started falling apart. Would have expected better durability from Merrell.

come and grippy
have excellent grip for rocky terrain. Wore them and had no issue when having to scramble up and down along with being comfy.

As close to perfect as you can get with a hybrid
These have great ankle support for most scenarios but it wouldn’t be enough for serious distance full backpacking - for everything else though this boot is a winner. I really like the locking lacing hardware and how well it keeps me laced in exactly where I wanted. These first few outings with the boots have been 4-5 hour non-technical hikes, and no issues at all. I haven’t worn them in very wet areas and weather yet, but my other Merrell Gore-Tex have always lived up to expectations. There have been some very sandy and dusty trails and the bellows gussets kept that grit from making its way into my shoes and socks which is often a big frustration point for me with other shoes. The tread on these is very aggressive and kept up with scrambles over both loose sediment, mossy boulders, and damp leaf-litter covered flatrock. I got these in the bright orange because the sale price was unbeatable at the time and I didn’t care what they looked like, but I have to say - I have had SO many people stop me on the trail to ask about them because they liked the unique colouring, so good job on that I guess! If these had the tiniest bit more torsional rigidity for ankle support, these would be my all-time perfect for everything boot, and I will definitely be looking at them again down the road after these wear out.

Rugged
This is the 3rd pair of Merrell hiking boots I have bought over the years. The other 2 pair were for light hiking, and did great. I bought the Rogue boots for a 6 day hike in the Cotswolds, UK. I have been breaking in the boots in preparation for my “big” hike. They have done great on steep and rooty mountain trails. No blisters or pinching. They feel great!! I definitely recommend these boots!!!

Love your feet, invest in good shoes
I just did 280km in 7 days, in my Rogue Hikers. They are wonderfully light and supported my feet. It did not keep the rain out, after walking for 9 hours in non-stop rain. But, I think no Cortex could keep feet dry for that amount of hours. I did 55km on one day, and I do not think it would have been possible with different shoes. It was great for walking on dirt and rock, and the grip was great even in the rain.
