Neon Gear 45L Backpack

Succinct organization, that's the name of the game that Mammut's Neon Gear 45L Pack is playing for rock climbers. It's like a portable closet for sport climbers, with internal straps that let you hang your quickdraws like jackets, and the external top strap fixes climbing ropes so you can maximize the pack's 45L capacity for a day's worth of essentials. Mammut also added a rope bag to protect your climbing rope from dirty crags. The pack's suspension system includes a rigid Contact U-Frame, ventilated back padding, well-cushioned shoulder straps, and a padded waist belt that you can remove when you aren't hauling heavy trad gear up Indian Creek's steep approaches.

One fatal design flaw...

Very comfortable hip and shoulder straps, great bag, would be perfect for light crag days or laps at the gym, but I had to return this due to one major, fatal design flaw. If you have to strap a rope to the top, which is has a built in strap to accommodate, you are not able to use the top pocket for anything. The strap resides in that head cap pocket, so if you're cragging with a lot of gear, and have to carry the bulk of gear when climbing with kids, like I have to do, then I have to put my rope up top... and so I also lose an entire pocket for stowing other gear. Otherwise great bag... ultimately went with a different product.

Great all-around bag, no complaints bought it for the back panel access, the tarp is a plus! It is really comfortable for long approaches. I've used it for moderate multi-pitch climbing/regular crags/one-night backpacking trips I do think the shoulder straps can get in the way of opening the back panel, but it is not a real hassle.

Great bag with one big design flaw

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I used an older version of this bag for several years and loved it. It's spacious and easy to organize. After years of abuse, it was time for a new bag so I ordered the current model. I decided to return it because the new model has a big design flaw. The strap on top of the bag to hold a rope can only be used with the top pocket open, which makes it impossible to use both at the same time. The old model had a separate pocket just for the rope strap, which was much nicer. Because I use the top pocket and the rope strap all the time, this new design doesn't work for me. The rest of the bag seems mostly the same as the old model, which was great. The hip strap is now padded which seems nicer, and the material touching your back is upgraded. I would have loved this bag if it wasn't for the rope strap problem.

Best crag pack

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I love the big back panel opening for easy access. There are plenty of compartments for keys, guidebook, belay glasses, sunscreen etc. The internal gear loops keep items like belay device, lockers easily accessible. Large enough for a day of cragging and then some
