Great hiking/trail shoe

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
9.5

I just received these and have a couple of initial impressions. I've owned a pair of Hoka One One in a trail running shoe and think they work well for the 'trotting' around I did at the time. One thing I noticed, for me, was they ran a tad small so I needed to size up...and that's tricky. I'm usually an 8.5-9-ish in trail shoes but the 9 was just a bit small (toes touched the ends a little) and the 9.5 fits good in that regard but was just a little roomy. So I went for the 9.5 and didn't really have a problem. These, on the other hand, have a LOT of room in the toe box. More than I recall with the trail shoe. I think that can be 'fixed' with a more padded sock in the forefoot. All in all, not a big problem because I'm not really going to be putting these through the wringer on trails...just using them as an all around 'work' shoe. I do like the height of the ankle support and think that will help keep pebbles out on trail...the material is solid and I believe will last depending on my intended use. Obviously, try a couple of sizes on (if you can) before purchase to get the right fit.

Won me over!!

I had tried some other Hoka models when they first came out, but found them a bit too soft. Since that time Hoka has gotten into the trail and hiking markets. I recently have had 2 knee surgeries, and my trusty Salomon Cosmic 4D's (which are a stellar boot) were proving to be too stiff. So I decided to give Hoka another look. I want to say it was 10 years ago when i tried them. (not 100% sure on that) Right out of the box, I knew these were winners. Very stable. Just the right amount of padding and give. Since then I've bought the Challenger & Kaha shoes. If they had my size, I've read that the new version of the Tor Ultra is very different than it's first iteration, and will give that a try too. I do lots of walking for my work, so footwear is a must. The boots don't have the same range in "plushness", but if you try their runners, make sure you try different ones to see what combination of stability and cushion works for you. If it's your first time, it's worth ordering up a few pair and trying them out at home on the rug. Love these so much that some of my other very trusty boots, will probably find their way to ebay.
