Aced the test

I bought this parka at the end of season sale, amazing price! The very next day I got to test it working in minus 37 wind chills (good old Alberta). The parka exceeded my expectations, handling the cold and punishing winds with ease. I can highly recommend this parka to anyone dealing with extreme cold. Great parka, great price !! Thank you Fjallraven

Durable and Warm, to a Point

Overall I like this coat and will keep using it, but if you’re cold-natured/over 50, you won’t find it as warm as some describe. It’s certainly not a coat that’s “impossible to be cold in” as FJ says its founder intended. With temps around 30-35F (0-2C) it’s warm enough on a leisurely walk. Above 35-38F it’s too warm. In anything below 30F I must wear a fleece or a wool shirt underneath. Today it’s 15F outside, and I had to add a second down jacket (down sweater basically) underneath. This is with no wind. So I wish FJ would have used 800CU down or better. It’s baffling they used 700 CU when so many competitors offer higher fill power at around the same price. (Even the FJ Arctic parka only uses 700CU!) Not to mention the 10 percent feathers—why?! To be fair, this coat is stuffed very full with down/feathers, but I wish I never had to wear more layers when it’s not insanely cold. I do like the coziness, even if it makes me look like the kid on South Park. The pockets and the hood are great. The zipper is beefy but did take a while to get used to. In addition to being on the wearer’s left it’s a bit finicky—but after some initial struggle I figured it out. This coat is too bulky in the arms to comfortably drive in, but I knew that. The adjustment cords are Ok. I like the simplicity and avoidance of elastic (which wears out) but the two for the hood are often trying to get in my mouth with the hood up. The fabric is among the best features. It’s quite tough and seems to be in two layers on the exterior. I have seen no down leakage at all. And it’s slick, so it repels dirt much better than the textured fabrics seen more often these days. It’s not waterproof but melting snow isn’t a problem. I wish it were slightly longer, to go mid-thigh. At 5-9” size S is perfect but it falls to just the top of the thighs.

Great choice, hope it lasts like they say.

Pay attention: there is quite a difference between the regular expedition down jacket and the lite version. I live in Rome, Italy, and the first one would have been way too warm here so bought myself the lite one which has 35% less down and is great for mild winters. I don’t wear it everyday but when it gets chilly I am so glad that I have it. Sizes run a bit large. I am 187 cm and 110 kgs with a muscular build, usually wear XL but I had to get an L which fits perfectly.

Perfect in every way

I got this jacket for my son to wear during out vacation in Northern Scandinavia. Man, this jacket was everything we expected and then some. Firstly, it's WARM. And I mean whale watching in Tromso warm; walking around Kiruna and Abisko in -35°C warm; kinda way-too-warm for the -15 Stockholm warm. Basically, super-frigid temps were never an issue. Disclaimer: we also had quality base and midlayers. There there the weight and was LIGHT! also, very very packable- perfect as a pillow or cushion. The multitude of clever pockets and fastenings were the cherry on top. And if a teen says he'll use this item for the next 10 years because it's that great, you know you have a winner.

Jacket is a monster

The jacket is much more than expected and will probably be too much for NJ but I am sure we will have a few days here and there where it come in handy. The jacket is long so if you are at a football game in the middle of winter you will stay warm sitting on a cold bench for sure. The jacket zips in on the left side which is a little bit hard to get use to and the zipper seems to be a little finicky to get it to work. With the double zippers I have found that you need to hear a click once the zipper is inserted and then you can zip up the jacket without issues. The hood is supper insulated as well. Due to all the insulation the arms almost feel like they are snug. I have heard people saying these jackets run large but did not see that to be the case on my jacket. I can easily add a sweater or another layer under the jacket but not much else. The jacket seems to be the correct size. The pockets are huge and the has inside pockets, comes with a pouch to fold the jacket up and use as pillow.

This jacket is the best. With a size medium alone, the jacket fits rather well. It was a bit bigger than I assumed based on the image but it is actually the right type of jacket I purchased. More than what I purchased, this jacket is amazing.

Best Jacket Purchase of all time

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
XL

I bought this jacket after doing a lot of research comparing other brands in a similar price range. This is without question the warmest jacket I've ever owned, and the quality is unmatched. I wore it regularly in 15 degree temps w nothing but a long sleeve shirt on and at no point felt cold. This is a lifetime purchase, and worth every penny. I'm 5'10 and 210 lbs, musc build. I considered a large, but am glad I went up to XL. It fits perfectly.

Expedition Down Jacket

The jacket is amazing, very warm, the pocket placements are great. This jacket is filled with top quality down with a fantastic hood and very robust zipper. The material is hard wearing and will last a lifetime, I have many Fjallraven jackets but this is the best. Lee P

Expedition Down Jacket.

This jacket is excellent, very warm, I'll never feel the cold again. The quality of this jacket is amazing. The pocket placements are excellent. Very robust zipper and drawcords, you can easily use while wearing large gloves. The fill of the down is unbelievable. I have many Fjallraven jackets but this is the best. So good I bought the Lite version also. Both jackets will last me for many years.
