The Warmest Sweater I've Had
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I didn't purchase this at Backcountry, but I'd like to help anyone considering paying this much for a sweater. Pros: The only piece of clothing other than down/primaloft that's, for all intents and purposes, as warm as those things. If it breaks, they give you a new one. The sleeve on mine started to unravel a little, and as it was expensive ($275) three years ago (?), I sent it back. I marked on the return form that it had sentimental value, so they returned my unravelling sweater as well as a new one - now I have two of them. It's not itchy. That's not to say it's soft and luxurious, though. It has a kind of hard finish, but definitely not itchy. Reality: It's a sweater. It's only "Buy it for Life" if you're cool with the idea of repairing it when the moths finally chomp on it, or you tear it on a fence, etc. It's not impervious to these things. Not necessarily a con, but it's very heavy. Like it's pounds heavy. It's not like a normal "heavy" sweater. Understand that this sweater is intended for cold, static warmth. Even in the mid-'30s, if you're moving much at all, you're going to sweat. it's gotten into the low 20's this winter, and this sweater with a jacket (and/or another light wool layer) makes the cold and bad go away even if I'm just standing around outside drinking beer.

Great fit and feel

Love this sweater. Yes it's a little pricey but you are paying for made in USA quality and lifelong durability. The weight is ideal for fall through spring. The wool is very soft against the skin. I usually have to wear long sleeve undershirts with wool but not with this sweater.
