Why We Like The Ohm Assisted Braking Resistor
Edelrid's Ohm Assisted Braking Resistor is unlike anything the climbing community has seen before, and it drastically increases safety for lighter belayers and heavier climbers. When clipped to the first bolt or placement, the Ohm increases rope friction so belayers don't fly in the air when the climber falls or lowers. This device doesn't interfere with rope handling whether it's the lead climber clipping or the belayer taking. When heavier climbers fall on the first piece, the most likely result is a ground fall, unless the first piece has an Ohm attached to it. Edelrid made this device compatible with any belay device and any rope between an 8.6 or 11mm diameter.

Works great

It works exactly as promised. It doesn’t seem to interfere with giving slack despite what some of the reviews said. My 130 lb son can easily control my descent and I’m 185 lbs

My boy is 11 and weighs 70 lbs. This is perfect for him belaying me. Takes most of the weight off and allows him to safely catch me on lead falls. Very impressed.

Game changer for bigger climbers

Got an ohm to help my belayer, but didn't know how much it would help. I'm a bigger guy, about 285, and my climbing friends are all in the 140-200 range. Took a couple test falls and my belayer barely moved, had confident control. Falls changed from meeting them at the 1st bolt, to barely a bunny hop. Will not climb without this thing anymore.

Giveth and Taketh

This device adds friction to the rope system, and that goes both ways. This is definitely adds security when a sport climb is hard off the start with a big weight difference between climber and belayer. When the route is stepper or has a low bulge, the rope hangs in the friction groove when slack. I’ve been short roped when climbing and clipping from this. Also, had a loop of rope build up between the Ohm and the second QuickDraw because the slack would fall thru the Ohm, down to my belayer. The Ohm does what it’s suppose to do, but it has hindered my performance, even high up on a right. Maybe extending it will help, but when you’re already 6 bolts up, it is a little too late for that. Not for the performance minded and a great way to blow an onsite.

This thing has made my (a <100lb female) climbing trips with men so much safer, easier, less stressful, and more fulfilling. Now both parties can really push it and not worry about taking falls. Lowering men is 1000x easier as well where I would previously struggle to stay grounded or to lower them at a consistent pace.

If you have a big weight difference between the belayer and climber GET THIS! It's incredible how much force this takes off the belayer on a fall! I weight 50lbs less than my partner and it has made belaying them so much safer and comfortable. Easy to use once you understand the setup, 1st clip and it's done. No more flying feet in the air when your climber falls!

Does what it should

My girlfriend is a good 60lbs lighter than me without gear. This does it's job and helps her be more confident. We don't use it as much anymore because it's helped train her confidence and she feels good without it.

Works great with my lighter climbing partners, and gives you more confidence to go for it, knowing that your fall won't result in smashing your belayer into the wall. I've heard of people breaking toes that way.

I got this for my brother and his wife. They are very different in weight and this device makes a up the difference. As far as use goes it is pretty straight forward to use. We clip it to the first anchor so we connect it to the rope while on the ground so all you have to do it just take it off your harness and clip it to the wall and you are all set to climb, and your stress can be focused on finishing the climb and not hitting the ground because you weight more than the person belaying you. A must purchase!
