Why We Like The Danner Mountain Light Boot
The original Danner Men's Mountain Light Boot, introduced back in 1979, is still considered to be one of the classic hiking boots of all time. The newest iteration for today is built with nearly identical specs. There are, however, a few modern upgrades that we certainly appreciate. The boot starts out with an incredibly durable one-piece leather upper, lined with a GORE-TEX waterproof liner for the ultimate in extreme weather protection. The speed hook laces give a good, snug fit even with gloves on. The full-length fiberglass shank creates an excellent platform that is plenty stable for you to carry heavy backpack loads, especially if you're planning to be out for multiple days on end. The wide last is perfect for people who like a slightly roomy toebox, either for big feet or just for comfort when carrying a heavier load. The soles are Vibram Kletterlift for excellent traction in any conditions.

Paper thin color on the brown boots, so that the first scuff on the toe box shows raw light brown leather that is very hard to cover. As others have posted, no insoles of any type. Might be the first time that I have boots in the last 30 years that there was no insole. The volume is very large, allowing for full orthotics and heavy socks. Really too much volume for the size. On the plus side, no break in needed at all. The corollary to that is I can’t imagine that these boots will hold up under any East Coast muddy rocky hiking. Sort of the urban equivalent of Zamberlains.

The Danner Mountain Light Cascade Clovis GTX is indeed an iconic boot, but note this is old technology and other boot manufacturers deliver better out of the box comfort and more predictable sizing. If you’re committed to buying these, this is what worked for me to dial in the fit. I sized down to 10.5 but normally wear an 11-11.5 in Asics and Mizunos and 45 European sizes and normally pair my boots with Smartwool medium weight boot socks. I broke them in without insoles (they do not come with insoles) and was told by the salesperson at the Danner store they are not designed to wear with insoles. However she suggested what worked for others are their proprietary half Airthotic Foam insoles ($18). After some break in (again w/o insoles ) the half insoles worked and significantly reduced heel sleeping. I also switched out the circle laces with the flat ones (comes with both pairs) allowing a more snug fit. If you’re looking for a serious backpacking boot try other brands but these are without a doubt a very handsome boot.

A bit awkward at first?.

Break in is a must with these. Unlike fully synthetic boots, they will seem awkward to wear and use right out of the box. Give the materials some time to mold to your feet. It?s worth it. I added a small aftermarket insole, wore them around the house all day for about four days.

I bought these because I wanted to re-live the experience when I had a similar pair in the 70's. The style is timeless but the confort and construction have all the benefits that modern materials and craftsmanship can deliver. I don't use them for hiking or anything technical, but rather to complete a more rugged look with jeans, a plaid shirt and a puffy down jacket. I couldn't be happier. The shoes fit like a glove and are VERY comfortable even on day one. I suspect it will take several months to fully break them in and then they will be even more comfortable and stylish given normal wear and tear. I am so glad that Danner still makes a boot like this!

I tried the Mountain Light and the MLII. This was a narrower boot, not as chunky. Fits true to size. Breaking in is a commitment, but worth it. Get on youtube and search on how to best tie a hiking boot so it does not loosen or slip. If you do that you wont get blisters. I did at first but figured it out after. I ordered metal tipped laces and they are a nice addition with a surgeon's knot. These are a great addition to my gear.

I received my Mountain Light Cascades. This makes my 5th pair of Danners. The new boots are the quality I expect from Danner, BUT where are the airthotic inserts that came with the previous 4 Danners I purchased? Am I required to purchase the inserts separately? I have an extra pair of inserts I can use till this matter is resolved. The boots are Danners which makes them the best. The fit is the same as my other pair of Mountain Lights. I wear a 10.5. I purchased a 10 and the fit is good. Backcountry provided fast shipping with excellent communication.
