The Black Diamond Speed 50 Backpack has plenty of space for all your gear whether you're backpacking over the weekend or climbing ice or rock for the day. Its removable hipbelt moves with your hips, so you can hike without any restrictions, and the active suspension system allows freedom of movement that you'll appreciate when you're finagling your way up vertical ascents. Black Diamond added a thermo-formed back panel for a comfortable fit and feel, and integrated a removable framesheet that doubles as a bivy pad when you're forced to spend an unexpected night high on the mountain.
The Speed has a cinching skirt beneath the removable lid to seal out snow and rain, and it can be extended to adequately fit all of your climbing gear with ease. The 210D fabric is very durable and light, and Black Diamond welded 420D abrasion overlays in critical areas so it doesn't tear up against the mountain's rocky ridges. One front and two stretch side sleeves provide room for a rain jacket or a couple of water bottles, and you also get two PickPockets and removable crampon straps to secure your ice climbing and mountaineering essentials.

I used this thing between Mammoth (Agnew Meadows) to Tuolomne Meadows on the PCT (~29 miles) in a one night, 1 1/2 day trip. Although this pack was designed for the alpine, it works well as an UL backpacker's pack. I don't know why BD did not attach an exterior open pocket for storing and easily grabbing a plastic water bottle. I'm not a big fan of carrying a hydration bladder inside a pack, and that's the design of this pack. The other characteristics of this pack are so good, that I am planning to add the exterior water holster myself. So I'm giving this pack 5 stars. It's light, feels good on the shoulders, and looks good.
