The Backcountry Plinko Carbon Touring Ski Poles have that wonderful balance of uphill-friendly lightness and downhill-worthy rigidity. We made the lower shaft out of carbon to keep things light, and the aluminum upper ensures solid stiffness when we're planting and hopping down steep chutes. The shafts adjust to accommodate a comfy length for both uphill and downhill travel, and Komperdell's Power Lock 3.0 secures whatever length we want. We also lengthened the foam grips so we can choke down the pole while side-hilling something steep.

Baskets Fall Off
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I had the same experience as others. Baskets fell off on the first run. I had to order Komperdell replacement from Germany. Otherwise they are nice light study poles. A little heavier with the added duct tape to keep the baskets on :)

Great poles except for baskets
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Bought em and first trip out was backcountry skiing on variable snow in Alaska. The baskets have moving parts to attach, and they came loose several times. I managed to save one, but the other is lost permanently in the Talkeetna's. They tried to make them fancy and rotate on the pole to accommodate for different angled pitches. But it's unfortunately a fail. An improvement would be to simplify and affix the basket in a more permanent manner, like the competitors do. All that said, the rest of the pole is great. Awesome, long grip for steep traverses, very solid adjustment snap, and light pack/swing weight. If you're M.O. is soft powder and gentle use, these would be great. It would be helpful if they could supply replacement baskets or had a solution/work around for the known issue.

Poor design
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I rarely take the time to write product reviews, with the exception of things I?ve found to be remarkably good or, unfortunately in the case of these poles, bad. Construction, quality, etc seem to be fine, with the exception of one critical flaw - the powder baskets. As mentioned in the other reviews, the basket is held in place from below with a fragile plastic clip. Broke on the first day. I?ll cut to the chase - lost one this weekend skiing powder in VT. Immediately rendered the pole useless in soft snow conditions, and frankly, could have been a real problem in the backcountry.

Powder Baskets Not Secure
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I was excited about these poles as I thought they were a good mix of modern design at a good value. However, on my first and only day using these poles I discovered they have a serious fatal flaw. The powder baskets are not secure enough to withstand the pressure of even a moderate downhill run. The poles arrive with the powder baskets separate from the poles. They each have a three prong plastic connector that attaches the basket to the shaft from under the basket. When initially installing these I was concerned about what appeared to be a very vulnerable connection but I dismissed it assuming that the product designers knew better than me. However after my first run in moderately deep snow, I got to the bottom and both baskets and both connecting pieces were gone. By some miracle, I was able to retrace my tracks and find both baskets and connectors. I firmly reattached them and did some tests by dragging the poles through deeps snow. As I suspected the pressure of being pulled through snow pulled the baskets off again without much force. I studied the connection and I am convinced that I did not do it incorrectly and i therefore caution people from buying these poles. If others have not had this problem than I must have a defective set of poles. I love backcountry.com and I hope they fix the design. I spoke to a gearhead named jack who immediately issued me a return and had me send the poles back so they could be examined. Overall a disappointing gear experience however the customer service easily made up for it.

Light, but too fragile.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
The aluminum part of this pole bent on my first descent touring. Now I cannot collapse the pole any more than 120cm, which does not make it very good for travel. Really disappointing. That said, they are quite light, and I like the grip.
