These tights are legit probably the worst thing I've ever purchased.. the color was horrendous enough then I tried them on and literally questioned backcountry and their entire company. These monstrosity of leggings should never have been made or even thought of. They are see threw they are thin they are a weird fit. I'm concerned for whoever came up with these and whoever decided these needed to be made..

Two Pair: One great; one with QC issue

I ordered a black pair, and liked them well enough to order the UT orange pair, even though I went to a rival school. Ha! HOWEVER, the orange pair had a small hole in the crotch at the first wearing, from not being sewn properly. And as others have said, the seaming was starting to come undone on that pair, with lots of loose threads, after just one wear. I am really disappointed. While I don't climb anymore, sadly, I thought these would be more durable than regular leggings because of their advertised abrasion resistance. I give them three stars because fit is good, the pockets with flap are a terrific idea, and fabric is sturdy. I would love them if Quality Control were better, but as it is, the orange pair is a big disappointment.

Problems with seems, otherwise like them

I really like the material and fit of these climbing pants; however, I have found the same problem as a number of other reviewers -- the thread in the seams starts to come loose within the first couple of wearings.

Not abrasion-resistant

I found the fit on these to be fairly standard; in my case, they ran a little large. I wear a size 24 in most jeans, and the xs was a bit big. They work great as a leisure or gym legging. The black ones are not see-through. I have worn these climbing (in a gym) only once, and they immediately started pilling around the knees. The threads on the seams in this area are loosening as well, and despite these being marketed as climbing leggings, they are not abrasion-resistant. I liked them initially and had high hopes, but I'm a bit disappointed with the instant pilling.

Good for leisure, not for climbing

As others have mentioned, these pants definitely run small. While I love the color, the pockets & placement of the pockets, the material definitely doesn't stand up to climbing. Upon first wear (which was to the gym, not even outdoor climbing), these leggings snagged and have continued to snag and get loose threads with any wear since. Also not very flattering. Overall, pretty disappointed.

I initially loved these pants! I sized up from a medium to a large based on the "Climbing Freedom" review and they fit well. I received the pants just a week prior to a hiking trip and when I pulled them out of the box, a piece of loose thread ~3 inches long was hanging from the front seam (area circled on the left); I clipped it off rather than pulling on the thread and it seemed fine. They were comfortable on the trip, but after returning and putting them through 1 wash cycle, the front looked worse and there was a ton of pilling on the back of the leggings (all over - circle on the right is an example of just one of those areas). This was despite not sitting down at all (except in the car) while wearing them. Given the cost, this is pretty disappointing.

Fit is so weird

I usually have to buy XXS leggings and yet these are too small for me in the calf and thigh. The fabric is relatively thick and I had to really try to get these on. The calf is WAY too tight and I by no means have big calves. They were also about 6" too long for me and that section just kept getting smaller and smaller. Even the thigh was a little tight on me. The waist area was fine if not a little loose, they were kind of getting pulled down because the calves and thighs were so much tighter than the top. When I got them on there was a seam that was already unraveling and the logo on the thigh was falling off. I am the opposite of curvy so I'm not really sure who these would fit. For reference I have a 26" waist and 35" hips and I usually wear size 24 or 24 jeans.

The Gelsa is Backcountry's answer to form and function for climbing leggings. This legging is all business, with tough fabric that won't wimp out against rocks while breathing well while in pursuit. Were you worried about the pockets? Well, don't be! they are positioned perfectly to accommodate harness use, and also have a built-in closure that will keep your valuables safe and sound! Selfie at the summit, yes please! I typically wear a M in Backcountry brand bottoms, but in other brands a S. I would recommend you size up if you are a S/M or M/L size person.
