Good product, crappy marketing

I bought these looking for some abrasion resistant, heavy-duty pants for mushroom picking and shoulder season hiking. These pants are great for that. Comfortable, clean design, stretchy, somewhat water resistant, not too shabby. From reading the other reviews, it seems that the main problem is that these were marketed as "soft shell pants" which they really aren't. They are beefy hiking pants, and I can see why someone would be disappointed if they were expecting a true "soft shell", but as burly hiking pants they are great.

Okay so overall these are decent pants but not what they are listed for. I spoke with customer service to see if these would be a good winter pant and was told yes, they are not. These are a super stretchy pant with some wind blocking but in my opinion are way too thin for winter. They fit great, are very stretchy for movement, and have decent abrasion resistance. Also the pockets are lined and deep which is a nice touch. However being billed as a winter pant they are way too thin, even with a baselayer (in my opinion). Additionally the built in belt is a joke. It's a pain to unhook and does not stay tight at all, im constantly tightening it up throughout the day. For any other season than winter and if you can handle a crap belt go for it, otherwise find a better pant.

Got it for $42 and it's well worth it. Perfect for -10 to 10 Celsius without base layer as long as you don't stay in one place for too long. A bit chilly in -20 C with a baselayer, but good enough if you keep moving. For my 6"0 and almost 180lbs size 32 fits really good

Fit Perfect, But Not For Winter

Definitely not a winter pant, unless paired with a base layer. I’m 6’0” 175 size 34 and they still fit perfect with a Baselayer. I’ve worn them a dozen or so times and they’re very comfortable with plenty of stretch. As for waterproof, I’ve only worn them when it was misty and didn’t get wet. The attached belt works fine and the pockets hold an IPhone easily. Would have bought another pair, but were out of my size.

I bought the pant hoping for a warm winter outdoor pant, hoping to replace some Marmot pants I've have forever. These were a solid softshell, however they did not have much of a brushed texture on the inside, and so were colder than previous Stoic and Marmot softshell fuzzed pants. Also, they're pretty slim--I'm 5'11", 160, and they were a nice street fit, and would be tight with anything other than very thin long underwear. The waist was also marginal--the 32" was barely that. It's a nice pant, but it's stretching it to call it a winter pant due to the thinness of the material, though much burlier than, say the OR Ferrosi pant.

Good pant for spring ski pursuits - I think it's a stretch to say these are great for winter pursuits, but I suppose if you had a baselayer on they might be alright. I use these most during spring backcountry missions and they do really well. These aren't waterproof but remember, they aren't supposed to be. They are DWR treated, so they are water REPELLANT. And they do well. Which is why they are perfect for chilly, but sunny spring excursions. Highly recommend these for that or for hiking. If you want some waterproof, you need to look for something else.

These pants fit nice and are flexible and comfortable to wear. The dealbreaker for me is that they get from inside. Wore them first time in light rain and within 5 minutes my legs were wet. I'm not sure why Backcouhtry would recommend this for winter/snowy weather.

Bought em some month ago in size 36. To be honest Backcountry 36 is really small. like 34 other brands,...so ordered number 38. Also the fabric is really thin , I can't imagine to wear em during winter in Illinois. No way. Beside of sizing and fabric thickness they are really great. Hiked during heavy rain for about 2 hours and pants remained dry. Like em a lot. Hopefully size 38 gonna fit me better.

Paired with a lightweight wool base layer this pant has met my requirements perfectly. It’s stretched in all the right places at all the right times and it’s just water repellent enough. I mostly use this pant for winter hiking and backcountry xc ski-abouts. On my first excursion with these pants I did find it a little awkward try to open a bottle with the belt buckle. Holding a beer and fidgeting around near my crotch I admit had to look awkward and I was wondering if I need to take my pants off to use this bonus feature. After opting to leave my pants on and just loosening the belt enough the task was easy. Only con to these pants is the little side pocket. It will hold an iPhone 13 mini but it’s uncomfortable. I think it would serve better as a vent or maybe just not be there at all. As a pocket its in a location where goods are subject to breaking while sitting.

Thin material, too tight, nice color

I wanted a heavier softshell pant for high-output winter activities and unfortunately this doesn't quite fit the bill IMO. The fabric is pretty thin even though it's marketed as a heavy double weave (much thinner than the OR Cirque II). The fit around the thighs and seat is too tight (whereas the waist is actually a bit large), such that the pockets aren't very useful, unless you want stuff bulging out. Also the built-in belt seems nice but in reality it has limited usefulness as it pulls too far to one side and doesn't allow the range of adjustability that a normal (non-attached) belt would. The brown color looks nice in person. For fall and spring outings with little to nothing in the pockets, these may suffice, but they weren't nearly burly/heavy enough for me. All said and done, not bad pants but not what I was looking for.
