When it comes to backcountry touring you used to only have two options: lightweight tech bindings or dependable DIN-rated frame bindings. Just like having cake and eating it too, you couldn't possibly have a light pair of bindings to skin up and a burly pair to ride down, until Atomic presented us with the Shift 13 MNC Alpine Touring Binding.
The Shift requires you to skin in tech mode. Simply flick switches on both the toe and heel pieces to engage the toe's pins and activate the heel's walk mode. In walk mode, the Shift's pins provide the same walking stride and touring efficiency as any tech binding, with a heel riser to assist on the skin track's steeper sections.
Without a frame, the Shift only weighs a mere three pounds, which isn't as light as ultralight tech bindings, but certainly lighter than alpine touring bindings and those hybrids with DIN heels and tech toes. After reaching the top of the skin track, you can flick those same switches on the toe and heel pieces to clip back into the binding like it was a regular alpine binding.

I gave the shift a good solid try for 3 years and even got the updated pair just to see if that was the problem, but they do not work well with bigger riders), tons of problems with prerelease, brakes not going down after the prerelease and the toe lock mechanism always coming out of the locked position. really wanted this to work out but im sticking with the Marker kingpins from here on out.

Great in downhill mode

I only have 1 pair of skis for both resort and backcountry skiing. These are great in downhill mode. In uphill mode, getting your toes lined up with the pins is fiddley. I've gotten better with practice. I still recommend these bindings.

Great tour/all mountain setup
My goto binding for touring and all mountain skiing. I love having a true releasable binding when coming back down.

Just Don't

It sounded so good. A backcountry binding with downhill advantages but . . . I used it for three trips in the wasatch backcountry and replaced it with Salomon MTNs. It weighs too much, there is too much fidgeting when transitioning, it cant handle torsion when traversing and the mechanisms are not smooth operating. Better options are available for less money.

Great bindings

I might be a hoarder as this is the 4th or 5th pair of Shifts I have. I am one of those skiers who has an ever growing quiver of skis and lately, each pair gets the Shift. Easy to get in and out of and I have always felt very safe and secure in these bindings on more aggressive and variable terrain.

How do I know what size to get? I want to use them with Nordica Enforcer 110 skis.
