Although he wouldn’t admit it, Eric Hjorleifson is well on his way to becoming a legend among some of the world’s most accomplished big-mountain skiers. The 4Frnt Hoji is Eric’s pro model ski, and it benefits from the years of research and development gleaned from Eric’s previous pro models, the EHP and Renegade. Immediately, you’ll notice that the Renegade’s Reflect Technology was carried over to the Hoji. Reflect technology helps to blend rocker in sidecut in a way that allows this monster to ease into turns, hold an edge with confidence, and resist hooking in deep snow—and it floats like an eagle on wing. Full-radius rocker, a directional shape, and neutral sidecut (at the tip and tail) take things a step further by giving you the agility to maneuver through tight trees and the power to truly hammer on the gas when the terrain opens up. There’s no tip slap or sloppiness, it simply glides along with a solid and planted sensation. Part of this comes from the improved torsional rigidity gained by 4Frnt’s semi-cap construction, which partially wraps the topsheet around the sidewall.
Skiers who earn their vertical will take particular interest in the Hoji’s 112mm waist. You get just the right around of girth for landing big airs without bobble, and, when coupled with the full-radius rocker, the waist width helps to improve on the already impressive flotation. A fiend for big-mountain touring, the Hoji is a ski that’s just as easy to use as your resort shredder if you regularly take on steep, wide-open faces and massively deep conditions.
The Hoji is a newcomer to 4Frnt's Signature ski collection. Among the fat, rockered rides in the Signature collection, this ski is the most comfortable breaking trail during the approach to big, exposed terrain in the backcountry. Only the YLE and the Renegade are comparable to the Hoji. A dedicated big mountain ski, the Renegade is stiffer and longer than the Hoji. More of a backcountry park ski, the YLE is slightly softer and designed with a symmetrical design, so it gives you a more versatile platform for a wide range of skiing styles. Ultimately, the Hoji is the ideal choice for charging as hard as possible when your way to the top relies on your feet rather than a lift.
