I bought these trousers to take with me when I climb Kilimanjaro. I wanted an insulated trouser for those cold nights around the camp and also for summit night itself. They’re easily the warmest trouser I have ever owned, when it was recently in the minus weather here in the UK, these were epic. I was probably still too warm when I wore them outside and this was with just underwear underneath. Fit wise is perfect, I’m a 32 and given these are meant to go over additional clothing they’re spot on. The only thing I would say is they’re no way as fitted as the picture would have you suggest, but that doesn’t bother me. They’re a quality pair of trousers that are going to be my best friend on the mountain, during winter and when I go skiing. I made the right selection buying these!

Photon Insulated Pants

Don't generally write reviews until I've had a piece of kit for at least a four season year and have used extensively. Bought these primarily for sitting around inside/outside the campervan in the colder months. What a hit! BUT, have also been used on bothying and camping trips. Great to pull on over fleecy leggings for a toasty evening long cosiness. Haven't tried them cragging yet but would probably be great for a standing around session. Used a couple of times in the Scottish mountains winter season but a bit warm for general mountaineering. Really wish I'd had a pair of these during my Mountain Rescue days. Only downside is that the zips tend to get caught in the fabric quite frequently.

The Photon pants are, without doubt, the best purchase I have made for my outdoor pursuits. For standing around camp and cooking out in chilly conditions, insulation on the legs is highly underrated. They have kept me comfortably warm for hours when being inactive. They're also perfect for at the crag ice climbing as they fully unzip down each leg, allowing for them to be put on with crampons on. When doing any winter activity, I also always pack the Photon pants as part of my winter emergency kit to keep any injured party member warm (along with emergency bivvy and a way of getting a hot drink).

One of the best purchases I have ever made. Tons of warmth for weight- I run warm and can comfortably sit around in these in temperatures close to 10 degrees F. Any lower and I throw on another layer on. With activity, however, I?ve easily taken these down to below zero F, and really haven?t found their limit yet ( -10 F is the lowest I?ve been active in these). They pack down small, and are easy to wash. They repel light rain well, and snow bounces right off . These are also tough- I run dogs in the winter and have had Alaskan Huskies jumping all over my pants consistently. Not even a scratch. I also live off grid in a bell tent and, as the title says, live in these this time of year. I only really take them off to work indoors or wash them. Get yourself a pair- whatever you think you?ll need them for, you?ll be glad to have them. They are worth the size and weight in your pack, and double as a pillow if it?s too warm. Awesome job, Rab.

The photon pants are my ideal harsh conditions pants. The reinforced sections on the knees are perfectly placed for snowy skin transitions and mountaineering in mixed terrain, holding up against rock as well as keeping out snow. Since they pack small, I'll pack these even on warmer days if I care to hang out on a windy summit and take in the view a bit longer before heading down the mountain!
