Why We Like The Spire GTX Hiking Shoe
The La Sportiva Spire GTX Hiking Shoe offers the performance, durability, and protection we need for rugged peak-bagging day hikes and fast-moving backpacking trips. This versatile hiking shoe features Gore-Tex Surround technology, which not only offers waterproof protection in the lining and upper, but delivers effective draining for multi-dimensional dryness on the trail. One of the only pitfalls of a waterproof shoe is that although waterproof membranes keep water out, they also keep water in when creek crossings and other mishaps leave them soaking wet from the inside. The Spire GTX solves this problem by incorporating aeration channels within the footbed and midsole, as well as drainage ports towards the bottom of the shoe, giving a fully waterproof construction that continues to keep our feet dry when the unexpected happens.

Fantastic!
I recently bought these as a lighter shoe to accompany the Mid GTX I bought last year. This shoe is fantastic and checks off many boxes for me. I appreciate how light they are, the sturdiness is very noticeable, and the traction is fantastic. The heel construction allows for a very easy & natural gait, which I appreciate. Great shoe and recommended!

Saved my trip!
I bought my pair on a trip to Iceland recently in the only clothing store I could find open on a Sunday in Reykjavik, and they saved my feet for sure. The next day I climbed a steep, rocky path to visit an extinct volcano, the day after that hiked up a glacier to drink direct from the source, and over the next several days climbed up and down many hills to visit waterfalls. I was expecting blisters; I had none. I knew nothing about this brand prior to buying these boots (I don’t do much hiking and don’t know much at all about hiking boots), and my choices frankly were limited to what brands this small store carried and what sizes were available. I can’t believe my luck finding something that fit so well, required zero break in, and was comfortable from the moment I put them on. They are lightweight, kept my busy feet from drowning in sweat and, as they’re a low-slung model, avoided any ankle-bone chafing that has irritated me in the past with brief encounters with standard hiking boots. I admit that I went to Iceland unprepared for just how rigorous it would be (Hoka sneakers are fine for all the walking I do in the hospital, but Iceland demands proper boots). These boots saved me for sure. I hate to think of how my much-anticipated trip would have turned out without them, and I know what’ll go in my bag first for my next adventure.

These shoes saved my feet!
women’s Spire GTX Is the best shoe I have ever put on my feet! They saved me in Switzerland and Italy! They were amazing on the mountains and on the cobblestones. I never want to take them off!

Most comfortable and supportive
Just bought my third pair. My everyday shoes for work and trail. Fit like a glove and offer great support/stiffness. Last me about a year. This third pair is running a bit smaller than the first two.

One of the best (if not THE best) low cut hikers
Purchased these after poring through reviews for technical low hikers/approach shoes. I wore them for a week and immediately purchased a second pair I liked them so much. I rarely do that before gauging a shoes durability but was convinced within a week that I would be replacing them with the same shoe. They do run very large so I had to send a few back to get the right fit. They're very roomy as a technical hiker/approach should be for carrying loads so that caused me to size down a full size. One of the most breathable if not the THE most breathable goretex shoe I've owned. Fantastic low boot.

My First Pair
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm not serious hiker by any means. Took these out today on just a snow covered crushed lime stone trail today, snowing and 20F. Can't say enough about how well I liked them, extremely comfortable, warm, handled 3" snow with ice below and no slipping. Tread is aggressive so not sure I would recommend spending any time on pavement, but man once I hit the snow covered trail they were exceptional. Strongly would recommend these shoes.

Best purchase in a while!
I am not sure what took me so long to write this review, but I must say that I absolutely love these shoes! I bought them in early 2019 for a hiking trip to Spain (the Camino de Santiago) and have since used them extensively for hiking through the mountains and hills of California. Even though the tread on the soles is a little worn at this point, they're still as comfortable as they were on the first hike I took in them. I use orthotics for my flat feet and bought them a half-size bigger and they've been great! No blisters or hot spots ever! This is especially important due to the fact that my wife bought another brand for our Spain trip and had blisters after day two. I am in the market to get a new pair of boots/shoes and will definitely get another pair since I know they work well for me.

On my third pair
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- 42.5
Just ordered my third pair of these shoes. The first two I put through the wringer and only replaced after wearing them out. This is an excellent 3-season hiking shoe, but living in Southern California it effectively works as a 4 season pair for me. Burlier than a trail runner, but way more comfortable and lighter than a standard hiking boot. These are my go to for everything from backpacking trips and day hikes. Comfortable enough to wear around camp too. I only wear La Sportiva and found that sizing translates well between all their shoe styles.

Narrow, stiff, hurt me
- Size Bought:
- 44
- Weight:
- 180
Had very high hopes and they were definitely not met. I ordered a size larger than I normally do and wore these on several trial hikes over a few weeks before a 100 mile section hike. After 1 day I had begun to get blisters. I switched to a thinner sock but ultimately these shoes are very rigid and unforgiving. The toe box beat up my toes badly. Multiple blisters and black / dead toe nails. I do not think going an additional size up ( 2 over normal) would have helped although possibly it would have. Expensive mistake.

Didn't fit me, but still worth a try...
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
- Size Bought:
- 11, 11.5, 12
- Height:
- 5' 9"
- Weight:
- 142
I have narrow feet and the LaSportiva Nucleos in size 12 fit me perfectly. I tried an 11, 11.5, and a 12 in the LaSportiva Spire, and none of them hugged my foot as well as the Nucleos. They all felt a tad bulkier in the mid-section than I expected. I returned all 3 sizes to BackCountry and will continue my search for a non-backpacking hiking/trail shoe. With that said, if you're considering this shoe, I'd still say it's worth trying on. It might just work for you.
