Why We Like The Rab Expedition 1000 Sleeping Bag

While not quite as warm as the top-of-the-world-worthy Expedition 1200 or 1400, the Rab Expedition 1000 -22F Degree Down Sleeping Bag is nearly a pound lighter than its burlier counterparts and uses the same hyperlight 850-fill hydrophobic European goose down for unsurpassed warmth and weight savings. Rab sandwiched all this insulation between layers of water-resistant Pertex Endurance and Microlight fabrics to keep us toasty and dry, even when the storm is blowing through the tiniest gaps of our tent and condensation is freezing to the walls.

The Expedition 1000 uses a longitudinal baffle design with Flowgate technology in the torso to keep the down from shifting and leaving cold spots and an angled foot box for comfort and consistent insulation. We're only as warm as the air the bag traps, so Rab designed the Expedition with close-fitting neck and face baffles, an insulated collar, and a drawcord hood to prevent heat from leaking out. They also cut the bag with a roomy design to be compatible with down clothing when you need to sleep with some extra insulation.

Superior Equipment

I have many overnight experiences in sub-zero F temperatures with a variety of sleeping bag products. Over the years my favorite had been the North Face Inferno, in both the -20 F and -40 F versions. However I had a lot of issues with down distribution. It’s stupid to carry all the weight of an expedition bag when you have sections which literally have zero down layering. The Rab bag absolutely nails this problem. I’ve tried to simulate cold spots by manipulating the bag in various ways, and I just can’t. I also feel that the fabric and stitching quality is the best I’ve ever seen in a sleeping bag.

I spent my first night

I spent my first night in my Rab 1000 Expedition bag on top of six feet of snow in the Boulder White Clouds in Idaho. The nighttime temperature dipped to 0. Beneath my bag was a 3 inch Ex-Ped mat. I was planning on going out a number of times before writing a review but after simply one night, I simply know enough about this sleep bag to write a review. It is phenomenal. I was the only one in my group that was not cold. I slept like a baby. I have owned 0 degree bags from Marmot, Kelty and Alps Mountaineering. I won't need to own another one. This bag exceeded all my expectations. So excited to get back out there in the frozen tundra. Thanks Rab.
