I have three of these pants. Chicago winter 38 F° wind over 25 miles per hour. No bottom baselayer, no problem at all. It's so warm and comfortable and seems to be last long time.

The prefect winter tights!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Perfect winter tights! I had an earlier version that didn't have the side cell phone pocket or rear zippered pocket. I had to use an iron on pocket that later ended up ruining the tights. Glad that they added these as well as the waist pouches for fuel or extras, like gloves. If you also owned previous versions, be aware that the sizing is different. The medium fits like the small used to. Overall these are amazing and worth the $.

I have an older pair of TNF pants and the zippered ankles caused hot spots. This pair does not have them. However, the fabric is much looser than I would have expected-they are not compression tight. When I pull the fabric up, they sit way high above my waist and I have to fold them down.
