Why We Built The Backcountry NST Freeride 3L Shell Jacket

When we wake up to a favorable snow report, we grab the NST Freeride 3L Shell Jacket and head for the hills. We designed this shell in collaboration with the Natural Selection Tour to introduce a bomber riding jacket into our line that's packed with features and has a true freestyle-inspired feel with tons of stretch. The 3-layer waterproof membrane has our back when the storm rolls in, and the lightweight bottle opener in the chest pocket doubles as a D-ring so we can tether our radio for a touch of added utility.

Sizing

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
XL and L

I bought both the large and XLarge in order to get the right size. The jacket both looks and feels GREAT. The hood is very generous and can accommodate a 60+ cm helmeted head! However the sizing was just a little off for my 6ft 240 lb frame. XL was super big on me and L was just a little too snug despite the stretch that the fabric has. Thus, I couldn't keep them and it was such a shame bc it felt like a great shell for a good price.

Fits Very Large

I normally wear a large/ XL in anything so anytime something runs a little big as a large it's fits perfectly. I'm 6'1 with a 6'4 wingspan and I could use this thing as a parachute. If you're under 6'2 and under 200 don't even look past a medium in this jacket. Wanted to use it for my Snowshoe trip but will have to explore other options.

Wore for one season before and had no complaints, then this season had a very large rip in the backside of the jacket but was able to return it for store credit.

Last year I bough the bibs for this set, I saw the jacket was on sale and decided to match the bibs. 1st time out with the jacket I am very impressed by both the jackets features and quality. Very satisfied.

Color doesn't match pants

I bought the black & blue set for my nephew. I was packaging them up to wrap. The blues do not match. My nephew is is 6 4 and about 170ish. He is a bean. I bought him a large and he is very happy with the fit. He is 21 and the color doesn't bother him. All in all not a bad set. This set does run large. Normally I would get him a xl because he needs the length.

I bought this jacket for my son after reading the review and description several times. I ordered a large. He tried it on, it fit perfectly with room for a base layer. Sleeves were long enough. The real test will be when he wears it skiing this season. The features are impressive. My son is 6'2", 225 lbs with a large frame.

Nice design but color was off

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Tried a large and a medium, the medium was a much better fit. Large felt like a parachute. Hood is quite spacious even on the medium, easily enough for a helmet. I was disappointed with the color, I was expecting a nice burnt orange based on the photos, but the true color is more just a plain brown. It was a toss up between this and another shell and the color issue was enough to sway me. I ended up returning this one.

Great snow shell with annoying velcro

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've taken this out for 2 days of snowshoeing, a few hours of sledding, and 4.5 days of skiing, including 1.5 days of skiing during snowfall. The waterproofing has kept me dry in snow and it has proven windproof when exposed to 40mph gusts on chairlifts. Layering over base + shirt + fleece kept me warm down to 22F. The breathability seems very good and I had the underarm vents open almost all the time while skiing, though I haven't tried climbing any hills with it. Pockets hold lots of goodies. Note the left inside goggle stash pocket isn't very deep so it won't hold much more than one pair of goggles. The only two dings on this shell are: 1) Hood falls over my eyes if I wear it without a helmet or beanie (can fix by tightening the rear hood adjuster a lot). But the hood fits great over a helmet. 2) The hook and loop fasteners on the main zipper's external storm flap catch other stuff when you're not wearing the jacket--catch on themselves, on the sleeve cuff velcro patches, and on knit clothing. It never happens when the jacket is zipped up and happens rarely if wearing the jacket with the main zipper completely open. Otherwise, I love this shell. I am 5'11" tall, 185 lbs, and got the size Large, which fits perfectly over layers.
