Why We Like The ASSOS Mille GT Ultraz EVO Winter Jacket

Winter training on the open roads is not just a test of your resolve, but it’s also the season to experience cycling on deserted roads and climbs whose chilled pavement and snow-lined shoulders turn away the more fragile cyclist. Assos’ Mille GT Ultraz EVO Winter Jacket insulates your core on such rides and protects your motivations against harsh winter climates as you churn out the base miles. Updated to add increased protection and warmth throughout the entire jacket, Assos starts with the front and upper back — which face winter head-on — and combines their triple-layered NEOS Light and RX Heavy fabrics for windproofing and water-repellency. The sleeves are fortified with the breathable yet still winter-ready, two-layer NEOS Ultra and 652.RX fabric, while the back panel uses a three-layer, winter-proof, breathable soft-shell, NEOS Medium. Assos looks at the entire system as combining the highest-performing materials to meet the required goals of keeping you warm and protected as you train.

\n

Assos uses targeted stitch patterns to ensure a full range of motion in the riding positions while the center-weighted pockets are held tight and stabilized for comfort. The Tripe Ramp pockets create “lids” over your cargo to add security and peace of mind, as you don’t want to lose your phone in deep-winter training. The full-length zip helps manage overall heat buildup, and the regular fit of the Mille GT Ultraz accommodates your favorite baselayers without adding bulk that would catch in the winds.

This is a magnificent jacket with keen attention to detail and very high quality like you would expect from Assos. However, after all the years I have been wearing Assos gear, I should have realized that these garments are cut for the slimmest guys. I am slim but even the medium sized jacket was too tight. I had to order two sizes up and hope that the large fits just right.

Excellent! Well worth the money.

I've used this jacket for one season so far and it has been just what I needed. In the 38-46 Degree range, I'll wear a short sleeve base layer under it and be fine for 2+ hour rides. I'll switch to the Ultraz winter base layer for rides in the 25-38 Degree range and for rides below 25 Degrees, I'll typically add the mid-layer which has worked well down into the single digits (Fahrenheit). I wear and Medium and was 5'7" and 178lb for the winter. The jacket was roomie which was perfect for adding the mid layer. I am now 165lbs and without the mid layer, the jacket feels quite loose in the core. Hard efforts with weather warmer than 40 Degrees will probably require unzipping the jacket. I typically switch to the Spring/Fall LS jersey with the base layer and a vest at that point, unless its raining. Well worth the investment.

Ultimate winter jacket

I write this review two years after my purchase. This replaced a Bellwether jacket I used for probably 15-20 years. That jacket was so warm and I just needed a base layer to handle the majority of the coldest winter rides. I put a lot of effort into finding the next perfect jacket. I reviewed countless items on line and I never thought of going with Assos as it was by far the most expensive. I happened to be in an upscale bike shop somewhat local to me and they sold Assos products. I tried this jacket on and knew this was it. Luckily I was able to try one on because my normal size was too small in this line. I had to size up to an XL from an M. Well, I have now used this for two seasons and I could not be any happier - even with their customer service. Oddly, my zipper corroded and they replaced it without issue. My experience follows the others in that you do need much to keep warm with this jacket (I use my Skinfoil winter long-sleeve base layer most times) and I find can be a bit much once it is over 40°F but just pull the zipper down. Mine happens to have the integrated hood and I have used it about a dozen times, and it is a very nice add-on. This and the Skinfoil were my first ASSOS products and I just purchased the Mille GT spring/fall knickers and as expected, this is of the quality I have come to expect with this company.

I ride with this jacket in sub 20F NY weather all the time. Warmth is never an issue even with high windchill. When the temps get into mid 30s you have to unzip to vent because of how well it insulates.

Great jacket from 35-40 degrees

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

It is a well co trusted jacket. Wind proof and I wore it w a base layer. Once you get riding it is good. I did find my arms getting reallly warm and had to vent. My sleeves not to sweat. Maybe since I had a long sleeve base layer. I haven't tried with the below 30 weather. I think it would be fine with more layers. It is a little roomy not as super fit as other assos I have since believe that is was designed like that. 6' 155lb. Wore a large. I wish it was a little tighter fitting.

Yeah, it's warm...

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Ok, first and foremost - it's warm. Started my first ride in it this morning at 37 degrees with a 32 degree wind chill. Only a light merino LS base layer underneath. 20 minutes in, and I had to pull the zipper down just a bit to allow some cold air in. To be honest, at this temp I may actually just wear a short sleeve base layer and see how the jacket handles it. As far as the fit goes, if you're a medium in everything else, get a medium. It's snug of course, but pretty much disappears on the bike. I'm 5'8, 155lbs with maybe a 38 chest if that helps. The sleeves are pretty cool - they're actually two piece as the warm, soft material isn't sewn to the outer windproof layer, so you can tuck the under layer into your gloves and pull the outer cuff over the top. I liked this feature. A couple of "maybe" negatives for me - first of course, is this thing is expensive. But if you're reading this pending a purchase, you've already probably swallowed that so YMMV. Second - when I got home and peeled this thing off, my base layer was pretty darn wet. Now maybe that's a function of the merino wool, a negative strike on this jacket's breathability, the fact that it really wasn't frigid out, whatever. Just figured I'd point that out if you're expecting this to keep you bone dry. It didn't. Beyond that, it kept me warm (almost too much at this temp) and I guess that's what you're looking for in a winter jacket, right? Oh one more thing - if you've read previous reviews, make sure you know that this is the "updated" version (2021?). It does not include the built in neck warmer/buff, which I was kind of looking forward to. Guess Assos decided that this wasn't worth continuing. Edit - a month in, and this is clearly the gold standard of winter jackets if you're riding in the cold. I've been down to 22F so far and this thing just shrugs it off like you're sitting on a summer beach. My upper limit before I'm just too warm in this jacket is maybe 43/44F. It's that warm but not even remotely "bulky". Assos killed it with this jacket. Think it's time to pick up the matching bib tights to see how ridiculously cold I can go....

Proper Winter Jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Wow, finally a jacket that is comfortable, wind-proof and warm from 45 F down. My main issue with my other winter jackets was the wind protection, especially in the arm sections. I took this bad boy out the other day with the temp starting at around 36 F and ended around 45 F. Wind was between 12-16 MPH. I wore an Assos, long sleeved, winter skinfoil 4.4 base layer under the jacket. First 15-20 minutes of the ride, I was questioning my purchase. After an hour on the bike, I was noticing that I was comfortable and not thinking about the weather. 2 hours into my ride I was not thinking about the jacket at all (it was doing its job). Especially when I was riding straight into a head wind of 16 MPH for numerous miles. I could not feel the wind through this jacket!!!! After my three hours in the cold was up, I was contemplating buying a second jacket in the lollyRed (just joking!). This is an outstanding jacket. Once you get over the $369 price tag, everything else is great. In this instance, you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a winter jacket that will battle the cold and wind, look no further. The jacket actually does everything it claims to. I am a 51 year old, 5'10", 190 lb. weekend warrior rider. I only ride 2 times a week. Each ride is between 50-60 miles. I am in great shape, but would definitely be considered a "bigger" rider in the peloton. I usually wear an XL in all of my Assos Kit. I did go up to the XLG because I felt the XL was just a "smidge" too tight. After I wore the jacket on my first ride, I probably would have been OK with the XL, but I like the "roomier" fit of the XLG for my winter rides. I can not wait to see what the limits (cold temp) of this jacket will be. I feel that with my winter Assos skinfoil 4.4 base layer, I should be fine down to low to mid 20's F.
