Why We Like The A3 MIPS Helmet

Even if you know the twists and turns of the trail like the back of your hand, your noggin still deserves reliable protection against unexpected falls and impacts. To cover your cranium for those all-mountain adventures, throw on the Troy Lee Designs A3 MIPS Helmet. Its polycarbonate shell is designed to act as the initial barrier when charging trails, and underlying EPS foam absorbs impact through every fall. The A3 offers additional coverage along the temples and base of your head than its smaller sibling, the A2, but doesn't go overboard with chin bars that are better-suited for the bike park. MIPS technology repositions the helmet to soak up angled impacts, and a ventilated shell keeps you cool on hot summer rides. To protect your eyes from debris and glare, the A3 employs a three-position adjustable visor that our riders applaud for its ability to break cleanly from the helmet through a fall, reducing impact forces if you don't happen to stick the landing.

As an Asian, I have never found helmets that fit until I found Troy Lee Designs. My first helmet was a full-face and it fit really well. Same goes for this helmet. The magnetic chin strap buckle is easy to use.

Great half shell

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Got this as a replacement helmet after a crash, and I am very happy with it. As someone who is between a medium and large helmet the M/L is perfect, I really like that it is lower profile than my old L Smith helmet while providing more coverage. I was a bit worried because other reviewers complained about their riding glasses not fitting comfortably but I have had none of those issues. In fact this is the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn including how the glasses stems sit, there is ample room while the helmet still provides great temple coverage. Next time I replace a helmet I will be coming back to the A3.

Best helmet for heavy/extreme sweating.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This helmet is amazing. It fits so well and is so comfortable. It has MIPS. It has the magnetic strap. It has an adjustable visor. All not too unusual. Then you get to the liner. The front of the helmet has like a gasket, a squeegee like silicone or rubber part that sits against your forehead. In all my years of sweating profusely I have never found anything that actually prevents sweat getting into my eyes. Until now. This doohickey actually works. I would say it prevents about 80% of my shower-like, profuse sweat from getting into my face. It’s a game-changer.

This is the best helmet I have ever worn. It is comfortable, cool, highly adjustable, easy to rinse after a ride, and based on reviews, very protect that that whole brain thing. I really like that way it channels forehead sweat away from my face. Oh, and it is great looking. This is the only helmet for which I got paid a compliment by another rider. Obviously a case of helmet envy.

I have been riding in this helmet for a few weeks, solid. I was a bit uncomfortable spending over $200 on a trail lid, as anything i've bought in the past was about 150 max. A friend of mine that knows product well, swore i'd love the helmet. I do. It is so comfortable and packed with features that made me have zero buyers remorse. The ability to refine the fit as well simply with the adjuster, but if you want to go beyond and tune the comfort liner was a cool option. It looks great, feels incredible, vents well, looks like a expensive piece of kit. A+ job from these people. I am a 56cm and the M/L fits me like a glove with about 1/3rd to almost half of the retention dial turned in.

Decent helmet, exceeds expectations

My first TLD helmet, coming from Giro and Bell helmets I've been using for the last decade. I am pleasantly surprised how comfortable this helmet is. It feels like the helmet is wrapped around the head. I really appreciate how design of this helmet addresses little things, like magnetic buckle (super convenient) or piece of foam over the eyes area to keep sweat away. I do, however, have mixed feelings about that fin on the back of the helmet. What's the point of that thing? Does it even have a purpose? Looks like a weird little fantasy of a designer who spent all night watching "Star Trek". Overall, absolutely awesome product.
