Why We Like The Trango Down Jacket

Built to roll with the challenges presented by mountaineering and ice climbing, the Trango Down Jacket is our trustworthy insulation layer when we can’t afford to make compromises on technical summit bids. Designed to perfectly balance warmth retention and weight, Mountain Equipment’s dual-layer offset baffle technology makes the most of the 700-fill down’s heat-trapping abilities, all while barely tipping the scale over a pound and a half.

Great jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Large

Jacket fits me well although I'm a 32 waist and 6'1" and like a little room for movement and layering. I can get my large marmot paclite jacket over this with slight compression in the forearms and easily under my large 3L Goretex winter Cottonwoods jacket. Easily handles light rain for short periods. Love the inside stuff pockets for belay. Fit and finish are excellent. Handles the wind extremely well with the overlapping baffles. I can cinch the hood tight and still has great articulation without folding over my eyes. Stuffs down relatively well. 4 outside pockets that are relatively deep and big enough to use with thick gloves. 2 dump pockets on the inside waist (big enough for Nalgene bottles or skins/gloves) and a right-handed internal chest pocket big enough to hold my Galaxy 22 ultra with case and a headlamp. Out in 60 mph winds around 30F during a recent storm with trees falling and no issues with light rain/snow penetration which could change as the DWR wears. Jacket was warm enough that I had to unzip to bleed out heat hiking in that weather. This jacket could easily take me into the teens (F). Hood fit is excellent, deep neck goes up past my chin for full protection. Only one con on the zipper being a left-hand zipper (wrong side here in the states) and no waterproof zips, which would be the cherry on the top but definitely would affect the fit and flexibility when bending at the waist. I'll definitely look more at this brand in the future if they still import to the USA.

Comments on sizing and first impressions

Small

I just got this yesterday, so I haven't yet had a chance to put it through its paces, but so far I'm very happy with it. Build quality seems great. Sizing is what I expected/hoped for, as a warm layer over everything else. I'm about 5'8", 39" chest and 31" waist, pretty trim and wear a size small in most things. The small in this is spot on for me, with enough room to comfortably fit my Atom Lt and a soft or hardshell underneath, without be restrictive at all. This seems to run true to size, with the expectation that it will be layered over other things. A medium would have been way too big. I did wear it briefly outside just to get a feel, at around 30ish Fahrenheit, and as expected for a jacket with nearly 10oz of down it did absolutely fine at that temperature.
